Re: Taking Sick Children to School

Well it’s a lot easier now to tell your boss you can’t come in because your child is sick than it was in the 80’s .  I had to lie to my boss that I was sick and not my child.  No matter how high our taxes are, how does that help in this matter?

Are you volunteering?  No one wants to take care of sick kids if they don't have to. As a grandparent, I might do it if I lived near them.  But if my own health was at risk...I'd have to say "no".

Re: Taking Sick Children to School

I understand that people have to work & it’s not always easy to stay home with a sick child. But if you choose to have children it’s your responsibility to stay home with them when they’re sick or arrange for a babysitter.

I never sent my son to school sick. It’s unfair to expose other kids & staff to your child’s germs!! It’s not the schools problem it’s yours, period.

Re: Taking Sick Children to School

@GSPgirl, ain't that the truth! In 1987 my daughter had a very bad case of chicken pox. The company I worked for had unlimited sick time (which a handful of people truly abused). We had NO personal time however. I called my supervisor daily, for 7 days, saying I wouldn't be in due to a sick child. When I went back to work my supervisor told me to put "sick" on my timesheet. I refused. I worked at the company for 5 years at that point and had never used a sick day. My timesheet went to HR with 7 days personal on it. I got called into the HR manager's office and he told me to go with the flow and put down sick time. I refused. The hot mess ended up in the company President's office. He and his management team decided in my favor. Not only was I paid, but company policy changed - allowing for 15 sick days per year and 10 personal days. Small victory, but a victory just the same.

Re: Taking Sick Children to School

I understand some situations with parents who are paid by hour or who have unkind employers add to parents frustration. Notice, however, this particular parent is doctor. Many others too. Others teachers or professionals. Backup plans need to be made, especially if parents travel. Daycares don’t have nurses or isolation areas. They have regulated amounts of kids per caregiver. Substitute caregivers are limited for they have to have security checks, etc. This is another example of people thinking they are special and rules don’t apply to them. Grr..

I’d volunteer, and I have.  When my kids, grandkids or my husband have been sick, I take care of them.  Yes, I am exposing myself to germs.  Love is about putting others ahead of yourself.

I would and have taken care of other people’s sick children too.  I hate to see children suffer.  I have never gotten sick taking  care of sick people, but I have taken care of sick people while I was sick....especially during the stomach virus plagues.  Oh yuck!

What are the parents supposed to do? Most everyone needs to work and can't stay home with their sick kids. We better start demanding more from the powers that be as far as day care and time off with pay when your kids are sick. This is a poor and middle class issue yet we are not fighting for it. The money has to come from somewhere, either out of your own pocket or an increase in taxes.

Well the money better not come from increasing MY taxes...

i didnt  have children because I felt I wouldn't be able to afford them iespecially if I were to be single. I sure as heck don't want to pay for others' poor planning.

@LizzieInSRQ, I'm thinking that you're not one of the "It takes a village" people. Do you resent paying taxes for schools or just programs to help working people who have children?

What @NicksmomESQ said.  I never sent my son to school with a fever or diarrhea.  There were times when he had the sniffles ...and would want to go to school, then after an hour or two, would piddle out.  Those symptoms are a tough call.

This flu outbreak freaks me out....for the entire population.

And I did take care of sick grandchildren recently, as well as other members of my family.  I didn't get too sick myself (much).  I have a healthy immune system and got a flu shot

I don't think we should be shaming other people  into possibly risking their health, if it isn't in their best interests.

I know it's not available everywhere, but here we have professional sitter services that operate 24/7.
