I have received a few calls with my own number appearing on the caller id, that was interesting, lol.

@Estellee

Huh .... that's weird.   lol

@Tinkrbl44 Oh yes, the first time it happened I froze and just stared at the phone. Some kind of robo call if I remember.

Like many others, I don't answer my phone if I don't recognize the number.  Too many scammers, and I don't want to be asked "Can you hear me?".

If it's important they can leave a message.

Lately, I've been getting several calls and finally tried to determine who owns that number.

Unfortunately, all the "sources" want you to subscribe to a service!   Some also seem like scammers who just want my credit card number.

So .......  is anyone here aware of a legitimate source for checking phone numbers?

TIA!

Not really an answer to your question but my cell phone will send the call to voice mail and my house phone has an answering machine.  If anyone really wants to reach me they can leave a message.  97% of the time the phone rings, machine goes on, call disconnects.  If I recognize the voice I pick up. Legimitate callers will leave a message.

Also, as someone else mentioned, there are a lot of scammers and they use legitimate numbers.  I don't remember people's numbers the way I did years ago so if they don't come up as a contact I block them.

A couple of weeks ago I got a cell call from a number I didn't recognize.  I put it into Google and it came up with some  business that I get bogus calls from all the time so I blocked it along with all the others.  Then, ironically, later in the day I got a text from my cousin and it was the same number.

Spammers had gotten her number from somewhere and routed it so it looked like the call was coming from someone I knew. It didn't come up as one of my contacts because it wasn't really coming from her but from somewhere else.  It's like it was masked. I had to go into my phone and unblock her number.  My point is, even if you search a number there is no guarantee that the name attached to that number is real.

Re: TRACKING AN UNKNOWN PHONE NUMBER?

I have the calls from unknown numbers on "silent" that come to my phone. So much easier than having the phone ring so much from spam/scam callers. Then I go through and just delete them. Easy Peasy.

Re: TRACKING AN UNKNOWN PHONE NUMBER?

I've had a google voice number for years, when I get calls on that if I hit call back it gives me the real number.  Almost every single number is spoofed.  Wish all the phone services did this because then you can search it and find out who owns it.

Re: TRACKING AN UNKNOWN PHONE NUMBER?

If I just get 1 call I ignore it.  If I get more, I type it in Google Search bar.

You may not always find a name, but Robocalls will show up.

Re: TRACKING AN UNKNOWN PHONE NUMBER?

I too was getting a lot of calls (starting at 6am untill 10pm) from certain numbers over and over again.....sometimes 10 or more a day.  My son (who teaches me so much) told me that telemarketers get credit for every call that answers.....even if just the message machine. So they call over and over even if they know you are not going to answer because they get PAID to bug you! Doesn't matter if it just goes to your answering machine they get to count you as an answered number in their quota of the day. Over and over. My son's girlfriend worked this horrible job for a while and I am learning soooooo much about how it works, Good luck!

Hi   @Melzie

Geesh.  THAT is downright scary.  Calling a person by using their own friend/relative's hijacked phone number?   Go figure!    Forewarned.  Woman Frustrated

Thank you for this heads up.
