TOMORROW A MOMENTOUS DAY IN ENGLISH HISTORY

September 28 is the day in 1066 that William the Conquerer invaded England by way of Pevensey on the coast.

Of course, the Battle of Hastings still loomed ahead, but this was the beginning.  Became interested in  all this as a child, through one of those fictionalized accounts of the dukes of Normandy in France.  It was very well done-- caught my imagination.

Fascinating to think that the "Conquerer", the son of a Norman duke and a "mere" tanner's daughter, would alter English history forever.

And the French and the English have detested each other from that time. Seriously, though, despite the two countries being allies during the last century, both France and Great Britain look at each other warily. The French say that the British have arrived when their period arrives and the British say the French have arrived when it’s their time if the month. At best, the French and the British are frenemies.

I too have a life long interest in British history and William tne Conqueror. Did pretty well for a "baseborn". Also called being born on the wrong side of the blanket.

On my maternal grandfather's side we have an ancestor who went to Britain as a plain old soldier in William's army. HIs last name was French but it was soon Anglicized.

Very cool info from all of you, @Vivian, @Love my grandkids, and @Drythe!   Brings to life and makes so much more personal the mere facts of history, thanks!
