@Oznell

Loved Bonfire of the Vanities.

Don't think the movie did it justice, but it was entertaining.

It seems a million years since I read it!

Quick, sloppy reading on my part, jackthebear.   Of the two Tom Wolfes, the Look Homeward Angel  one is my favorite.

Yes, I did see the movie and was impressed by Max Perkins' care of and devotion to Wolfe.

I read Look Homeward, Angel  when I was 16 and was profoundly moved.  Several books in my life have had that effect.

Several plays, too, affected me greatly and alerted me to the eternal verities of living.  Among them were Our Town and Death of a Salesman.  I was 14 when I first saw Our Town on TV, and I was so moved I wrote up my reaction/responses because I thought I would burst if I didn't.  I gave it to my teacher (his position in my day was called "Core Teacher"; he taught English and Social Studies).  He must have been surprised by the depth of my response to the play because he asked me who helped me write my paper.  Of course it was I, alone, who wrote it.  I bet he kept a close eye on me after that!  LOL  He was also a pastor on Sundays, so my guess is that he had a sensitive soul.

Just heard this on the radio when I was walking .. so sorry to hear this ...

One of his other books .. " My Name is Charlotte Rous" is one of my

favorites....moral of the story was that split second of decision

between doing right and doing wrong ... which I got from the Bonfires

as well ....

Don't be embarrassed.  It is a tome and I will confess something.  After seeing the Max Perkins film, I decided I wanted to re-read it.  Guess who flaked?  Me.  Just wasn't up to it like my 16-year-old self.  I, too, am ashamed.
