I worked several years for two different ENT doctors and both told me there is not anything you can do about it. I had a hearing test and an MRI and my ears checked but I had no problems. It is a very common problem and you can have it at any age. I have had it for about 20 years and like many others have gotten used to it. The white noise is so you concentrate on that noise to distract you from dwelling on the tinnitus. Mine comes and goes. It could be there for several months, gone for a few days or for a few months. When it is very quiet you do hear it more. Mine is a whishing sound and sometimes gets very loud and other times I forget I have it. You can buy white noise machines very cheaply if you wanted to try this. They have quite a few sounds to choose from. You can always return them if they don't work for you.
With the younger generation playing there music so loud we saw many starting to get hearing loss at an early age. I still think of this many years after I worked for the ENT doctors.

First thing I noticed was once sugar was gone, so was my ear ringing. I didn't even notice at first as I was so used to the ringing. One night I had shut off the TV and was reading, suddenly I realized how quiet the room was!
Woah....my ears are not ringing! I had to figure out backwards to pinpoint out it was sugar. Sugar was messing with my thyroid, so the ear ringing going away was a bonus!
It is amazing how many health problems can be caused by food (American chemical food), but Drs are trained to look for a physical reason, not look for root cause.
I completely agree about food causing a lot of our health problems!
I don't have tinnitus but I know of people who, quite accidentally, discovered that their poor diet was causing the problem. When they cleaned up their diet and cut sugars for other reasons, the problem disappeared.

Sorry you are experiencing Tinnitus--those who do not have it have no idea the misery we suffer.
Last month, I saw a Tinnitus specialist (not an ENT) .... he said 'hearing loss' is the "cause" yet my hearing seems fine to me, and a hearing test rendered normal loss for my baby boomer ears. My DH had bad ear infections growing up, so he has it worse than me.
I play white noise CDs throughout my house intercom, and wear my earbuds with low tone instrumental music when I am in a quiet place. There is no cure sadly. I also have Hyperacusis which is super sensitivity to noise.

My husband and I both have it. I'm wondering about allergys causing it or making it worce. I also heard somewhere that salt makes it worce. We tried the OTC product mentioned and it does not work as the others stated.
We sleep with the TV on as it is less noticable with the sound.
Good luck to all!

First, I need to thank you for your post! I have had ringing in my ears for a few years and
just learned to live with it. I recently went on a Ketogenic eating plan which cuts out sugars and carbs. I have only been on it for a week and a half but have also noticed
my ear ringing to be gone! What a blessing!!!! Hidden sugars and carbs I sincerely believe are the cause for "many" health problems. You are so right in stating doctors look for a physical reason, not looking for the root cause. Again, thank you SO much for your post!!!
