Re: THIEVES CAN EMPTY YOUR BANK ACCOUNT IF ...

I can't even remember the last time I wrote a check.

I write out a check now and then but mostly do on line payments or auto pay.  I check my bank account every day.  I do not have statements mailed to me any more or even bills.  No need for them and I can see on line anytime I want.

Re: THIEVES CAN EMPTY YOUR BANK ACCOUNT IF ...

I was expecting a check the beginning of the month but it never arrived. Two others never received theirs either, all 3 checks were mailed at the same time; written and then put  into the same USPS mailbox, to date none of them have arrived. Finally they were re-written and sent again via Fedex. I just sent a copy of the 'sticky substance' post from @StellabyStarlight to our CFO just to make him aware. I get an email several times a month, each time from a different 'employee' asking me to update their ACH deposit so their check can go into new account. We do a lot of checks from our company to different vendors across the country, and we receive a lot as well. I wanted him to be aware of what could be happening.

My yard keeper only accepts checks. No cash b/c he's afraid of getting robbed. I told him to get one of those credit card readers for his smart phone so he can accept cc. But he won't. He's not tech savvy at all.

And @SilleeMee  there are usually fees associated with all those 'pay on your phone' type gizmos.  I don't blame him.

My nail tech stopped using it cuz the fees were eating her up.

I write her a check.

You can't beat these thiefs.  If you write a check it gets washed, if you pay online your account gets hacked, if you walk around with cash you can get robbed.  You can only be vigilant with your accounts and do the best you can.

Totally agree @Biftu

My company got our bank account hacked online....they can come up w/ new ways to steal all the time.

I agree with other posters, check your accounts every day.

Re: THIEVES CAN EMPTY YOUR BANK ACCOUNT IF ...

What should one do if sending a birthday card to someone and want to enclose a check?

I don't put cash or gift cards in a card, because the post office employees can usually tell if a gift card is included.  It's easy to spot a greeting card of some type in the mail.

Seems like enclosing a check is the way to go.  (Or used to be anyway).

If it's a local friend/relative of course I see them in person.  I have some family/friends though that live in different states and I need to mail.

Any suggestions?

Checkwashing is common in Chicago.
High robbery incidents with the USPS.
Sign of desperate times. Sad for carriers.
They're terrorized with gun hold ups in daylight.
Can't even do they job.
Day coming very soon where checks will be obsolete.

@Sunshine Kate  I've heard it said employees can tell if a gift card is included but I have sent many gift cards inside a greeting card and never had a problem.  Nor am I concerned about sending a check.  Sometimes people overreact.

Re: THIEVES CAN EMPTY YOUR BANK ACCOUNT IF ...

We had over $100,000.00 grand taken out of our business operating account due to the check washing of a $32.00 corporate check written to an individual.  The bank replaced the money, we filed all the police reports and the thief got away.  The check was written in Texas mailed to Massachusetts and washed and deposited in a bank in North Carolina before returned to our bank here in my city for payment.

The only one really violated was the bank.  It was a pain but I will not stop writing checks personal or business.
