Backpacks are not allowed in our Middle School classrooms; they must be hung in lockers. High School it's about 50-50 as to them being worn to and from classes. One if the issues we've heard about is during a fire drill, it's been observed that the backpacks cause the students to not be able to get out of the classroom quickly as they are blocking the walk area in rooms. There was a hearing on it the past month and there is rumor that they will require all backpacks to be kept in lockers. Kinda stinks because classes are NOT close to each other so now many students are going to be late running back and forth to lockers. This now means changing classroom set up and....it's a mess.

My daughter told me they are now selling bulletproof inserts for backpacks.  Walmart and Amazon carry them, but she said they aren't always as good.

I read an article saying the sales of these have shot up 50% since this recent event and many companies are sold out and on backorder.

I think I would home school rather than resort to this. What if they don't have their backpack on at the time?

If it's dangerous enough in schools to need this, I would do whatever it took to be able to home school.

If the income from working is necessary, there are night jobs.

I worked 3 jobs at one time raising my DD with no child support (because he couldn't be found), just to keep her in a nice crime free neighborhood with the highest rated schools in my area.

My husband bought some kind of bullet proof insert to put into their back packs a few years  ago unfortunately the kids put their back packs in their lockers so it wouldn’t do much good unless them had them handy..

Most of the stores around here that sell kids' bullet-proof stuff is often sold out and they can't keep it in stock very long...it sells out as soon as it comes in.

How many students are in a classroom now?  There must be a better way.  My daughter's classrooms in elementary school had cubby holes for the backpacks, latter they put them on the back of their chairs.  There were a lot of kids in her high school using inhalers, I guess the boys just kept them in a pants pocket.

We will need to send the kiddos to school in full swat clothing with helmets if something doesn't get changed.

My daughter is in 6th grade, middle school.  They are not allowed to carry around their backpacks.  They're permitted two times to go to their lockers, that's it.

One of the local public school districts here is already talking about putting bulletproof seats on their buses. That way the kids can be shielded in case a shooter comes aboard.
