I would always try to steer them to something super cheap. Many of them felt obligated to buy because they stayed so long. But I've heard life stories, tragedies, funny stories, and chatted about current affairs. It cost me nothing to chat with them. I may have been the only person they talked to that long all day. I'm never forgotten that.
