I wiped the kitties down with wet cloths to try to help them. We are just not used to this here.

Our windows crank out so using a portable AC would be a bit tricky. If this is going to be a pattern we will have to do something.

Tansy, hope your son has AC. We will zoom to the farmers mkt in the early am and then back to hunker down. We don't even have indoor malls to hide in.

Hennala I hope the weather cools off for your part of the country!

I was thinking the same thing about you getting an A/C. They do sell portable air conditioners that sit on your floor. The only thing you need is a window to put the hose through to vent, which I think would be no problem with your type of windows.

May it get cool and rain for you! xox

Give some thought to the portable air conditioners. It would be worth it to cut a screen and do something with plywood in one window. The hoses are not huge diameter.

I have a double window in the bedroom. One side is glass that does not open. The other side is louvered(!) This makes for just about zero airflow. My landlord cut the glass straight across on the unopenable side, removed the bottom glass, and put in an a/c we jointly paid for.

I hope it cools down for you soon.  That's awful to have that kind of heat and no air conditioning.

I can't sleep well when it's hot.  I'm sure you can't either.

Is it possible to look into central air?

Henny,

I have gone through a horrible, hot summer near Silicon Valley.  A week ago we were dying. Last week it was in the low 90's, and cooled down at night, which was tolerable.

My husband and I flew to SoCal, (Burbank) Thursday, and were greated with hot, hot 107 weather!  Hot winds. We had 119 degree weather where I live in NoCal a month a ago, and I swear it wasn't as hot as this 107.  It is a weird heat!!!!  It was 103 after dark. Warm like you can't feel your breath. It never fails.  Last week it was cooler here and rained .  But as soon as we step off the plane , it heats up.  I swear we come here 7 times a year.  It can be 70, 80 degrees before we get here, but as soon as our plane lands there is a heat wave!  We have been here in December, and it was 89 to 91.  January last year it was hot as well.  I don't know how my daughter tolerates it.  They hate the heat, but their jobs are here.

Have any of you ordered any of the portable AC units from the Q. Are there any that you would recommend?

I grew up on " the Peninsula" near SF. and have lived here since college. I have NEVER seen weather  like this.

The ocean is so warm that the fog that usually comes in after three days of heat is now no where to be seen.

Wow, can't believe those temps!  Hope it cools down soon.  Without a/c it must be awful.

@hennypenny...I bought a portable A/C unit last year for my bedroom. It doesn't cool the room very well and eats up a lot of electricity. I have a medium size bedroom. It would probably work better in a small room.

I promise to remind myself every day that I am strong, courageous, and resilient.

The key to window a/c is to never believe what size room they say the BTUs will cool. Size up, as it were. My bedroom is average apt size - 10x12 or thereabouts. I first had a 5000 BTU a/c and it didn't really do the job very well but was still better than nothing. It finally died after 14 years, and the one I have now is 8000 BTU. It does the job, even in weather like we're having now. It's not chilly in the room, but I can get it down to 68-70 in the wee hours of the morning.  A/C (even central) only cools 15 degrees from the house temp/outside temp.  In the super heat we had 2-3 weeks ago, it was 91 degrees inside when I would get home, and about 76 was the lowest I got - but still comfortable.
