What did this college student do to deserve getting locked up in a North Korean prison?.   What was he doing in North Korea anyway?

He was probably tortured, then poisoned?

How wonderful for his family.  But, it is possible that he was released from NK because they didn't want to take care of him any longer.

He stole a poster.....

I am with the other poster who asked why he would even go there since there are so many other places in the world to vacation. You don't get away with stuff in some contries like you do here....

There's a chewing gum ban in Singapore, it used to carry a stiff penalty.  Caning is big there as a punishment.  Be careful of laws in other countries.

He is a UVA alumni so why would he choose to ignore State Dept. warnings about going to NK? Why would anyone go to NK?

It is the MOST repressive regime in the world; I have been doing some pretty extensive research/reading on the Kim dynasty and legacy for the NK  people.

Could he have been there on an undercover mission?  Could he have been there to write an expose?  Could he have been there to help people get out? Doesn't make sense that someone would just wander into N. Korea.

according to AOL his release was tied to an urgent visit by high ranking State Dept official recently.  fyi

He stole some sort of a political poster out of a hotel hallway on a floor of the hotel he wasn't supposed to be on, it was a floor where only workers were supposed to go, to take home as a souvenir. He was with a tour group.
