Students Make 'Survival Kits' For Metro Police Officers

OKLAHOMA CITY -
Fifth graders at Harvest Hills Elementary School were hard at work Friday, creating ‘survival kits’ for police officers. The students had been bringing in supplies all week and got to put together the packages in class.

Each item in the survival kits had a special meaning. Here’s the list of what was placed inside the kits:

Life Saver: To remind you of the many times you’ve been one.

Starburst: For that burst of energy you’ll need.

Payday: Because you’re not doing it for the money.

Paper Clip: To help hold it all together.

Hershey Kisses: Because you deserve them from all.

Gum: To help your unit to stick together.

Tootsie Roll: To help you roll with the punches.

Snickers: To remind you to keep your sense of humor.

Mounds: For the “mounds” of courage you need.

Michelle Canning is a fifth grade teacher at Harvest Hills. She said the students came up with the idea to honor law enforcement for their community service project about respect.

“That was what we heard the loudest from them is that police are here to protect and serve and they started listing all the things they do for us and they said we want to show them we appreciate them,” Canning explained.

“I know they do a lot for us and that they are not really getting respect right now and I just wanted to tell them thank you,” one student said.

“I wanted to make this because people have been criticizing policemen and they deserve lots of respect,” another student explained.

And what sweeter show of respect, than getting candy from these kids. They planned to pack more than 100 kits for local officers to be picked up on Monday.

@iceRedfire thank you so much for this as you have filled in the pieces I was missing.

For me with this, it's the thought that counts and the fact that someone took the time to put something together like this I would think would speak volumes to our law enforcement officers . . . Heart

I've read a lot of things that say that police throw away any food given to them. It's sad but people can taint prepackaged candy easily.

How about just enclose the poem with pictures of the candy on each line in some sort of frame?

@JustJazzmom

Great idea! That way, the sentiment is delivered, without the fear of tainting or food allergies.

Re: Survival Kits for our Law Enforcement Officers

Years ago I started sending pizzza once a month to the station. I kept hearing how much they liked it so it continued. I did not prepare the food. It came from a restaurant. It has changed over the years but they still get food once a month. The chief even called to see if I could do it on a specific day one month. It was no problem. Sometimes the fire department joins them.

When I originally started it I was providing free food to the police that gave me an escort to the bank. I thought if we could do this then why not do it for the department. It gives them social time to break bread together. I changed jobs and decided to continue doing it.
