There is an entire article from Microsoft at the link below and yes its safe but if you don't trust it Google Microsoft yourselves and you can find it.
After April 8th Microsoft will no longer support OR have updates for Windows XP. The link tells you what to do because with no updates this can open you up to hacking.
Me- I am not thrilled. They want you to update to the new Windows, or its suggested to buy new puters. Yeah OK our laptops work well AND fast and are not that old (3 or 4 years?). So we wont be buying more now.
IMO they are getting like Apple. Money hungry. Keep updating and getting rid of old products, with ZERO support, so people keep spending more money to buy new ones when your old ones work fine.
For instance, I have an older iPod and I registered our new puters as per request but my new music didn't go onto my old iPod from my NEW puter (and yes I know how to do it), so I stopped using my iPod.
Also I have the 1st iPad and was using Instagram and suddenly it stopped working. Oh I need to update but it still doesn't work on Instagram because quote my iPad is "old". Ask them for help they want to charge you because the products are older. Baloney! Im not paying! They just want you to buy a new iPad. Pff I don't think so the old one works fine! (even though I rarely use it because its little and I prefer big as in my big laptop).
So anyway now Microsoft is getting like Apple IMO. I think they should all keep having updates and give help IF we spend a fortune on all these products and our products STILL work!
And as far as Windows XP its NOT that old yet.

I think they should continue supporting the O/S also. But, in electronics, they prefer to make things obsolete as frequently as possible for the obvious reasons.
I only have one computer that is XP. I liked XP just fine but, with the newer levels of network security, I could not keep it online so I took it out of the mix. Too bad as it's a perfectly good working laptop aside from that.
I have one that is Vista, that I still use some. But the rest of mine are all Win7. I am not even ready for Win8. I think, since I have all laptops and laptops last me a lot better than desktops, I'll be good for a very long time. ![]()

ITA. You make an excellent point.
O/T I hope your back is doing OK and you're getting sleep.

You'll still be able to use computers with WinXP.....there just won't be anymore updates.

I liked XP. I am surprised though, that they supported it this long. It must be over 12 yrs old. I have Win7 in my machines, it's OK but, I still miss the XP.

Win7 is next...Microsoft will stop mainstream support on January 12, 2015. But the company will keep providing extended support until January 14, 2020.

Thinking back, I remember hating to have to let go of 98, too. Just a creature of habit, I suppose.

I was actually happy to let Win98 go. That was the one with the major BSOD problem.
I never had a Windows ME computer, but I always heard that that was a really bad one. Glad I dodged that bullet! ![]()

ME was horrible. A relative had that and went back to 98.

windows XP is pretty darn old. Vista, Win7 & Win8. That is 4 releases ago.
mainstream support ended in 2009 and XP came out in 2001. That is 13 years ago. That is old for an OS.
