Re: Suicide Text Teen Found Guilty!

Easy decision for the jury.  Someone that cruel needs to be off the streets.

I can't remember the exact words but she also texted his mother...basically taking responsibility for it. Telling his mother that she hadn't failed her son, it wasn't her fault. If anyone was to blame it was me etc.

The law is just beginning to catch up with social media, texting, all of it. Don't see how the judge could have ruled otherwise.

Whatever issues she had this girl was still directly complicit in his death. The inhumanity of it all is chilling and sickening.

The law is STILL catching up with cyber crime as well and we've had computers for quite awhile. Actions that are criminal to everyone BUT the law/courts occur all the time but still, rarely does anything happen because we haven't passed laws that allow the courts to take action. Almost 30 years so.... let us hope they don't take as long dealing with social media....

There are many articles stating that this was a bad ruling due to assisted suicide/Hospice care, etc. Again, I think the majority of society CAN see the difference but  there are those who would take delight in bringing charges against someone for the money or revenge.

@brandiwine

She elected to have her trial by a judge, no jury. She (and her lawyers) knew she didn't stand a chance with a jury.

I think she expected more leniency from the judge, but thankfully she didn't get it.

Hopefully, he's as firm when he hands down her sentence.

Wow, you made a real point there 😨  @MickD

Richard Allen Davis, and that horrible man who killed the nursing students, on and on.

Richard Speck comes to mind.   His prison time looked like one big party.

Boy, talk about mean girls! I think she got want she deserved, she was not a child. I know some kids are immature well into their late teens, but this is different. Kids need to be taught from the cradle that there are consequences for bad actions and maybe tragedies like this one won't happen.

This will probably be overturned but the conviction should send a message to those who for whatever reason think sending multiple texts encouraging someone to commit a crime is not a liable issue should think again.  We know she knew it was wrong because she tried to cover her tracks.  I think I heard his family is suing her family for civil violations as well.

I agree. It's not like she told him once to kill himself. She told him constantly over 2 months time. She googled ways for him to do it. She texted him daily asking if today was going to be the day.

She obviously has her own problems because I don't even try to understand how someone could do that.

Re: Suicide Text Teen Found Guilty!

She was sentenced today, only 2 and a half years. Fifteen months served, the rest suspended. Then five years probation. She also gets to go free pending appeal.

The prosecution asked for 7-12 years. The judge said her age was a considered factor. She was old enough to behave the way she did before, during, and after though. Hmmm..I just don't agree with that sentence.

Re: Suicide Text Teen Found Guilty!

I heard on the news today that her lawyer is appealing that sentence. There were some professional people on the same broadcast that were commenting on the sentence. One of those people was a psych doc and he said the girl was mentally ill at the time and that there was a drug she had been prescribed that might have made her do what she did....hmmm. Another woman, not sure who, had made a comment that the teen needed rehabilitation and not jail time.

I don't know what that teen needs but the sentence given to her seems so light.

I think her verdict is going to be sucessfully reversed.
