Hi. Perhaps this is a bit on the naive side so feel free to tell me. I am headed to NYC a week from today with some family members. We would like to go some place that has great food where we don't break the bank. We are simple. A fancy atmosphere and the need to be attended to at every turn, aren't important to us. Great food at a fair price, interests us much more. Am I foolish to think we can go someplace that comes close to this for $50/person. Thank you for any recommendations!

As a native New Yorker: Chinese -- Wo Hop on Mott Street; Intalian -- the Arte Cafe on West 73rd. Rachel's on Ninth Avenue in the Theater District; French -- Le Bonne Soupe on West 55. Those are the ones that come immediately to mind.

For a true New York experience, try the 2nd Ave. Deli, which is no longer on 2nd Ave. but the food is as good as always.
L'Asso Pizza in the Village is good. Visit the Markets - Chelsea Market, Eataly, Le District, the pop-up Norse market in Grand Central.

John's Pizzaria, 280 W 44th St. Times Square/theater district.
It's in an old renovated church. Good pizza, and other menu items.

Please narrow down the area you'll be staying in and the kind of cuisine you'd like. Otherwise, you'll be all over the map! LOL. You can the best recommendations this way.
Does your $50.00 pp include drinks (alcohol or otherwise)? You're visiting NYC! Which part of NYC? Manhattan, Brooklyn, etc? The NYC area has close to 9MM people living in five boroughs. I'll be more than happy to assist you with a little more info.
Good luck.

There are so many choices in every area of NYC....Carnegie Deli is always a good one, Virgil's BBQ....any of the steak houses are great, many great little cafes in the village....The upper east side has so many good restaurants....many of the higher priced restaurants have really good prices at lunchtime ....The Bryant Grill is a lovely experience, reasonable and midtown.....the Bastianich establishments are pretty reasonable.

I go to New York quite a bit since it's only 3 1/2 hours by train from where I live in Boston!
Since I don't drink alcohol and I eat a plant based diet my meals are always on the very inexpensive side. If you don't already really limit or even exclude alcohol that would make going out so much more reasonable. I think the servers really don't like me for this reason---but it sure does save alot of money. And the added benefit of eating the plant based diet--is that's ALWAYS the cheapest menu option no matter where you go. But I understand eating that way is a bit of stretch--so I would just too limit the alcohol or even leave it out of the meal!
My mom on the other hand always INSISTS on a drink. And that can be the price of some of my entrees-- especially if one orders a Grey Goose Martin at the 4 Seasons! ($25 dollars)!
