We had a large 16 x 32 above ground pool for over 25 yrs. We did finally remove it when we started not using it as much.
We did not have to run our pump 12 hrs per day.
If their filter is making a lot of noise chances are it's going to go out on them. I would go over & have a talk with them.
I'm in Ok & we could only use our pool from Memorial weekend until the temps start dropping at night generally beginning of Sept.
Maybe your neighbors don't have a clue how to take care of it. If it freezes where you live they better winterize it. If they don't you won't have to worry about it next year.

Good advice, appreciate it. We alreedy had a frost so your suggestion of not winterizing it made me laugh!

We used to run our pool 12 hours a day in the summer. I live in Arizona so we don’t know anything about opening and closing a pool as ours has water in it year round. Sounds like they need to have someone come out and replace the pump.

I have a pool, my neighbors have pools, our houses are pretty close, I rarely, even if all my windows are open, notice their filters running. I can hear my own but only a low hum. My conclusion, something is wrong over there with that filter, it shouldn't be that loud. You should mention it. You must live somewhere warm if they still have it up & running.

Sounds like new owners have no clue how a pool system works and should get a pool service to clean and close it at the end of the season. Running for such a long time - I suspect the motor will burn out. It would be like your refrigerator working overtime. Pray it burns out! LOL
If you live somewhere like FL or Arizona in the summer you need to run the filter longer than you'd think. When had pools in our homes in Vegas and So CA and in summer the filters were on a lot. It's a constant battle with the sun killing the chlorine and needing to brush and filter heavily just to keep the pool clear.
Our pool man told us the longer you run the filter the less chlorine you need, Our filter runs from 7 to 7. There is a low hum when it is running.

Me too @Katcat1. The direct but friendly approach. ![]()

I would go over and ask them to call a repair person in to save the motor from burning out.

I would explain the situation to my neighbors and ask them to shut down or fix the filter. They may think the sound is normal. It's just ruining it to allow the filter to run while it is defective, so you may be doing them a favor. Good luck.

I would talk about other things first and then ask how she's liking the pool? Then I'd say, I have a friend with one similar to that and when the filter made that sound she called someone and he said it may mean x,y,z and it could burn the motor out from running so high. You might want to check it out to make sure.
Then talk about something else for a few minutes.
I'm less comfortable being direct when I'm just starting out with someone.

They potentially have a serious problem....I was on the phone with our pool maintenance company and was getting ready to shut off the pump until they could get here....it exploded!!!!It was a very good thing I wasn't there or I could have been injured....
