Re: Stupid ? about teaching cursive

I hate the new printing trend, and am thankful my daughter's don't do it. Oldest daughter teaches high school Special Ed students; they may learn on an elementary level, but she teaches them to write their name in cursive.

I received 2 Christmas cards yesterday from adults my age, both were printed; I just shake my head, but at least I can read their writing.

Re: Stupid ? about teaching cursive

Not teaching cursive?!?! I've heard this in the news and on Facebook. This has to be THE most ridiculous decision made by school districts or perhaps it's made by each state. I can't imagine not being able to write!! Yes...kids are on their phones, etc, but not even being able to write your name?!?! I can't imagine printing everything!!! Who came up with THIS ridiculous idea anyway?!?!? ...and, no...computers are not being used in schools all the time? There are a lot of families who cannot afford to buy computers for their homes! I should know working in a school district! A lot of kids get free breakfast and free lunch because their parent/s can't afford food much less a computer or a phone for their children! If l had a child attending a school now where cursive is not being taught, l would attend EVERY Board meeting along with a lot of other parents!! Ridiculous!!!

Just like Latin or using a typewriter, cursive is virtually obsolete. You dont need to write in cursive to sign your name, nor do most need to write anything in cursive in the course of a workday. I havent written anything on paper in my job in years. Everything is done on a computer.

I can't think the last time I read cursive.
And e-signature is what I signed...nothing like my pen signature.

Times are changing.  We need to adapt.

No, we do not need to adapt.  When a person cannot even put a sentence together without using the term, basically five million times, they have not learned anything.  Who is going to take them seriously?  I would never hire someone who could not read cursive writing.

No...the progressive people will adapt.

Just like manual typewriters were a thing & not anymore,

Cursive handwriting will be replaced with something else.

The train leaves with or without you.

Re: Stupid ? about teaching cursive

[ Edited ]

My kids have all learned cursive in elementary school, my youngest just last year in third grade. If they had not been taught in school, I would have been happy to teach them here at home, just as I have taught them how to cook and do laundry.

In a few years, I suppose I will have to teach them how to drive! Not looking forward to that.

P.S. Back in my older relatives' school days, both homemaking and driving skills were taught in schools. I wonder if these are completely a thing of the past.

A train?  Gosh, that's so old fashion.  I would think that the progressives will want to go out on a space ship or something.

Re: Stupid ? about teaching cursive

Not being able to read cursive will be a handicap for anyone who gets into a situation / employment / research where they are required to read old handwritten documents.

Even if they decide to delve into their family's genealogy - old documents are all handwritten in cursive.

Re: Stupid ? about teaching cursive

As a parent of 4 in Elementary through High school my experience is:

The kids have been taught basic cursive in elementary but it is not as intensive as what it was when I was in school.  95% of their work is done on a school provided chromebook so they don't have much that needs to be written.

My teenagers do use cursive when they need to sign a form although its not as neat as what I was taught in school and they have to think about it more than when they print.

Re: Stupid ? about teaching cursive

Yes, "things are changing." But they also changed with the advent of the typewriter, and students were still taught cursive.

The idea of current and coming generations unable to read their own historical documents is sad.

The pain they have cost us, the evils that never happened.
