I’d never report someone unless this happens again. Reporting seems really harsh.

@sunshine45 those may be going away soon.  According to my Nextdoor group, ours got shut down recently, had yellow tape around it.  Apparently, someone was stealing mail out of them.  They'll either have to get a more secure one or I guess everyone will have to go inside.

Re: Strange Saturday mail delivery

In the past we've had other people's mail put in our box.

The worse was a day I found my mailbox literally packed - rubber bands all around the contents.  I took it out and realized I had the mail for at least 9 other households.

We're rural and I was not about to go along delivering it all (and you're not legally allowed to touch anyone else's mailbox).  The local post office was still open and only 5 miles away, so I drove there and handed it over.

The postmistress looked at me and said "You got this in your mailbox?!"  "Yep!"  I left it up to her what to do about it, but it was a sub.  Our regular guy was brilliant.

Another time I got a packet of mail (rubber band again) all for someone nearby across the road and I could tell it was important mail, so I waited till they were home and took it across.  He said "I wondered why we didn't get any mail!"

Sometimes mistakes happen.  I decide how to handle it at the time.

@Icegoddess

so far in my area we have plenty of blue mailboxes attached to shopping centers/office complexes and in local neighborhoods on corners. we have not had any being removed or roped off. if that happens to occur here i can go to one of the local post offices and drop off the mail there.

Re: Strange Saturday mail delivery

I had it happen once.  It was like he or she didn't feel like walking the rest of the block and just dumped the rest of the block in our mail box.

Sorry not sorry but I left it all there for the carrier to pick it all back up the next day.  I wasn't doing their job.

Re: Strange Saturday mail delivery

I would just let it go.  Other than asking the mail carrier about it, there's no way of knowing.  Sounds like maybe he or she was adjusting or sorting the mail in the bag and forgot to pick up a bundle.  Accidentally left it on your porch.  You did a very good thing by delivering the mail to the correct homes.  I see no point in trying to get the mail carrier in trouble by reporting. We get mail.  It's just very late.  Especially toward the end of the year. Our usual time is between 6:00pm and 7:00.  By November, the mail carrier carries a flashlight and we get our daily mail about 9:00pm.
