@goldensrbest - I do have a basement - the storm came so quickly.  My greyhound refuses to go down basement stairs - usually I let her out and take her around to basement door but didn't have time so we all stayed upstairs - wasn't going to leave her upstairs by herself - if she goes, we all go!

Puts me in mind of a dreadful storm we had several years ago - a "derecho" is what they called it.  We were several days without power.  Trees down all over the place.  Hope we never have to go through that agaiin.  Good luck to you, OP.   Hope you don't have to go through that again any time soon!

@Krimpette - this was similar - I've seen it only one other time in 14 years here in my part of Indiana.  Handyman called and said he had to take three different routes home there were so many power lines and poles down.  I just walked my dog and saw a beautiful huge tree snapped in half.

Don't know if you are close to me or not (I'm in Indiana too), but we had heavy rain, severe lightning and the power was off for 5-6 hours, then came back on for an hour or so, then off, then back on. It was a sleepless night.  Not fun talking to Duke Energy at 3am and then the cable company before 7am. Fingers crossed we don't have a repeat tonight.

@IUredhead - yes, I hear you, but we may be in for another round tonite.  I got no sleep either between lightning strikes, thunder, duke energy chainsawing and their trucks with the flashing lights all night long.

I'm glad you are ok and got your power back on.

I'm in Arkansas, we are suppose to have storms tonight, and up to 6 inches of rain by tomorrow night. The wind is starting to really pick up outside, but nothing like what you had to go thru.

I don't disagree with you, BUT those of us who live in the greater New Orleans area can't do basements.  It's why we bury  above ground - when you dig down, you hit water.  You might be safe from the storm, but you'd drown.

I miss the old "root cellars" we used to have in Georgia.  Seemed very safe.

@hoosieroriginal  I'm glad you are all OK no matter where you are.  Straightline winds can make it seem like the End is near!  Scary stuff!.  You are right about the emergency crews deserving of more notice than they get.  Hats off to them!

@Perkupthanks for the explaination.  It doesn't make sense to not have a cellar to those of us who grew up with them. But some places it seems it's just mecanically impossible to do.  I did see a T.V.clip of someone who had no basement so they built a little cement shelter about the size of a sideboard in the diningroom. Just enough for the family to squeese into.  the house was blown away but that cement shelter was still there on the foundation slab and they were all O.K.   Tornados would scare the heck out of me!   If I ever end up in Tornado alley I'm investing in concrete!

As I'm writing this, I'm looking at about 3 inches of snow on my deck and more snow is falling. Temperature is only 27, windchill at 18. Burrrr.
