Recently hired employees, yes.
But Thanksgiving hours just started a few years ago.
Actually, they didn't just start a few years ago where I live. Some stores opted to open on Thanksgiving in the DC Metro area for quite a few years.
I think Safeway was open even for part of Christmas Day last year...

I have to admit, that one surprised me a bit, but my mom ran in to pick up dinner rolls, and when you think about it, there are probably quite a few 'last minute' purchases of dinner fixings...

I have had family in hospital the week of Thanksgiving twice and went shopping for Thanksgiving dinner early Thanksgiving morning . It did not ruin my holiday. I was able to have one because someone went to work. Some people work all the time and cannot shop when others can.
I appreciate everyone who works holidays. I have been to the ER on Christmas Eve with family and needed medicine or supplies for sick family members on other holidays and weekends.

Jewish people are used to working on Hanukkah, Passover, Yom Kippur, and other high holy days. There are holidays for other religions that are not observed either.
To single out retail as somehow special when other professions work 24/7/365, and at the most profitable time of the year is just not realistic, IMO. There were quite a few years where stores were closed, but times have changed. We WANT people to shop on Thanksgiving because it strengthens our economy -- it's good for US.

AHHH! And the lovely show of compassion that is so typical here shows up again in almost every post. The "I had/have it tough so everyone else should too" crowd is really showing their heart, their faith, their way of following their spiritual beliefs. So very sad that so few want better for others than they were able to obtain for themselves. It's one of the reasons our culture will never move forward.
