For many years my Mom would have to make 2 Thanksgiving meals - one at noon for those going to work at 3PM and one at 5PM for those who worked day shift. She did it without complaint. We are a family of paramedics, police, fireman and nurses and have always been proud to serve in those rolls but they do play havoc on family holidays.

My dad was an employee for the local electrical utility and was often "on call" and responding to trouble calls on holidays, including Thanksgiving dinner time and Christmas morning. Never once did our family declare our holiday ruined or some other such nonsense. But can you imagine the caterwauling that would have gone on if he had simply said "Sorry, it's a holiday - my employer should be paying me for today because they appreciate me but I'm not going to actually work." Judging how posters complain on these boards over the most minuscule things, I can only imagine the trauma and complaints about the "selfish, greedy utility company" if someone's lights were out and no one came to get them back on.
Utility workers, health professional, transportation workers, LE...those are 24/7 type jobs of vital interest to keeping our communities safe and healthy.
Shopping on Thanksgiving?
Not a necessity of life.

Stores opening earlier - I think by later in the day most people will be done with cooking and eating. I also think it will cut down on some of the frenzy of Black Friday. I do not look at it as greed, but staying competitive. No shopping for me, but am sure some of my family will.
Many people have to work this Holiday - Policemen, Firemen, Health care workers, not only hospitals but nursing homes, etc. And restaurants, many eat out and don't think about those employees.

Restaurants are in the hospitality industry. A lot of their business is conducted when other people are OFF work and have time for a dinner out. Same with hotels...they are filled to the brim on holidays.
Hospitality workers also know what they are getting into when they choose that field.
Thanksgiving Day shopping is relatively new.

I have to say we have chosen to eat out when my DH has had to go to work later in the day, because it made no sense to do the whole production and then have to scoot people out the door because he had to get some rest before working all night. But that was a convenience, as I'm sure it is for many, like the elderly. If I had my way, nobody would work on holidays! But that's not realistic either, but again, shopping? Not so much!

I am fairly certain, if they are of normal intelligence, that anyone entering the field of retail sales knows when they do that they are going to be working Thanksgiving PM and black friday. That stores are open at those times is no secret.

Don't you find the "We can have a traditional, relaxing day with family and friends, instead of eating out early..." just a bit hypocritical? What is the difference between retail store employees having to work on Thanksgiving and restaurant employees having to work on Thanksgiving. You chose to go OUT to eat, others choose to shop.
