I echo a lot of the comments already posted: repetition, tax credit for the store, publicity, etc.

More annoying are the telephone calls, esp. For police assns., because the company that does the solicitation takes an unbelievable percentage of what gets collected. I tell them to have the charity mail me a solicitation directly. So far, no organization has.

Most collection bins for clothes and shoes are another rip off as another poster's thread discussed recently ( Planet Aid, among others ) here on the QVC board. Some don't even have the words spelled correctly !

After the recent news about Wounded Warrior Project, they are off my list also.

I have certain charities, religious and non-religious, that I will continue to support. Local food larders are a constant recipient...it is amazing how many folks need food for their family and " don't look " it. It is heart breaking for this to be the case in our country. Wish more would recognize this and donate their time, money ( for meat purchases ) or canned goods and basic house supplies.

Speaking of inferior stores, we had an Aldi's open up here and I thought I'd check it out. Once was more than enough! Luckily we have quite a few stores to choose from.

I don't really shop there much anyway, I do most of my food shopping at Costco. I will occasionally go to Walmart for the couple items I can't find anywhere else. I haven't addressed management because I have family that works at the store, and we have a very uncommon last name. In fact that's how I found out about it in the first place. The wall of shame is actually in the break room.

This is a pretty fascinating subject, but I don't see anything saying the store gets a tax credit.

Several years ago or so, each time a customer donated, over the Loud speaker, lots of horns honking, and 'Whooo-Hoooo's', etc. All day long. In a nation-wide supermarket. Very distracting, although I'm glad that folks donated. I would have preferred soft chimes on a musical triangle, or something similar.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

Years ago, I got a call from a gruff man saying he was from the Police Union and wanted me to donate to "their cause" which I had never heard of. I said we preferred to know charities before donating. He started getting almost rough with me and using veiled threats like, "You do want the police to come when you need help, don't you?"

Awhile later, it came out that it wasn't police officers, it was basically a scam, the police had hired others to make the call.

Now I always interrupt the spiel and say we do no donations by phone, and then I hang up.

I took a sociology class years ago where they were talking about charities soliciting in a public setting and how it made people more inclined to donate because others were around and they would feel guilty saying no.

I guess there is this sociology theory that you contribute more when approached in a public setting to save face.

Personally, I just tell the checker that I have charities I contribute and that is all I can afford at this time. I never feel pressured or embarrassed.

Charity is a personal thing and no one should force it upon you. I'm also sure the checkers hate having to ask.

Yep, it's a huge scam in Texas at least. It was all over the news. I hang up on them when they call. I'm not even talking to them.

Years ago (again), phone calls from our town's 'police athletic league' (so they said), for money for youth uniforms, etc. So I called our police dept. and they said it was not legitimate/official (or something similar) and to direct the solicitors to his office.

I say no. I get my tax deductions for charities. NOT the stores I shop with. I'm not big on all these stores that increase their prices to donate millions to charities and get the deduction their clients deserve. Small think I guess, but I decline to participate.

I have been approached by pharmacy in past few weeks but the ones who really annoy me are the various phone calls asking for money...........not once a month but some every day. Not asking for 5 dollars but over a hundred. They will not take no for an answer and sometimes become argumentative and unfortunately have to hang up on them. Worse is the Political donation calls and I laugh and say "Isnt it Ironic...the rich asking the poorer for money" I hang up on them and dont care what party they are from. When I explain I am disabled to any of them that doesnt seem to stop them either. Unfortunately the excessive calls, door ringing, the rich asking poor for money makes one not willing to listen to any of it anymore. Then once you do give you are pestered unmercifully by anyone they sold your name to and they act like they expect you to dnoate your lifes blood. Ughhh
