Re: Stocks Hit Record High

[ Edited ]

It's not inflation causing the higher food prices, it's greedy corporations that are price gouging the public.  Prices increased during the pandemic and now corporations are refusing to adjust prices as inflation is decreasing.  Here are some facts:

Food corporations are thriving. Between 2021 and 2022, the food and beverage industry recorded more than $155 billion in profits, according to Forbes. NestlĂ©, the world’s largest food company, increased its gross profits last year by almost 3 percent to $46 billion. Cargill recorded a 23 percent jump in revenue last year to $165 billion—$6.68 billion of which was profit. Tyson Foods, the largest meat producer in the U.S., nearly doubled its profits in the first quarter of 2022 due to soaring meat prices.

That profit windfall is making its way to corporate food executives and their shareholders.  YOU, the American public, are being price gouged.

There are no laws on the books that govern corporate pricing, however Legislation introduced last year by Representative Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) proposes creating a task force to monitor price changes in food and other goods and investigate corporate profiteering.  It's unlikely this legislation will get very far in a Congress controlled party who supports corporate profits.

First, as an equity holder I firmly believe in capitalism and corporate profits.  That's what makes the American economy work.  I believe in corporate profits and support corporations generating profits on behalf of shareholders.

Second, I haven't read anyone state that prices of goods and services are declining overall.  That's deflation.  Inflation is a measure of the rate of growth and that most definitely is decelerating.

If you oppose private enterprise generating profits, we'll, that's just an entirely different economic system.

Generating corporate profits is one thing, price gouging is quite another thing.

Depends upon one's definition of "price gouging."

I find it used more as an emotionally driven term.

Well, to tell you the truth, I guess I do get a little emotional when the local grocery wants thirty bucks for a turkey breast and the price of a frozen dinner that two years ago was a bit overpriced then at four bucks and change is now eight bucks and change... Come on, this is a bit more than mere 'profit'... Woman Wink

Price gouging doesn't need an alternate definition.  Most people don't find it emotionally driven.  Most people find it a reality.

Man, I've read thru this entire thread and I just don't get why people here are so darned determined to take any tiny bit of good news and beat it in to a pulp of despair and hopelessness. Y'all must be a real treat to be around in real life.

The toxicity in this place is unreal.

I choose optimism and joy. Do as you wish, but I'm not playing. It's just not healthy.

Totally agree @Zwervend . Be it Taylor Swift being extremely generous with her donations, this post with great news about the economy with inflation way down, stock market and jobs up,  lower food prices, lower gas prices, SS percentage increase, all great news.  But for some they don't want to admit it.  Be it from it does not line up with their political agenda, or they are just negative people and have that mind set or they want more and more.

You are right Toxic. They must be so tiresome to be around for any amount of time.
