Geologists are warning Hawaii residents to brace themselves for volcanic smog, acid rain and violent eruptions which could sent giant boulders flying through the air.

The Kilauea eruption last week, which sent lava flows running across the island, has been releasing toxic gases into the atmosphere above the islands.

Officials are now warning the dangerous levels of sulfur dioxide gas could combine with moisture and dust in the air to cause volcanic smog, or 'vog.'

The vog carries tiny drops of sulfuric acid which cause respiratory problems, even triggering asthma attacks in sufferers, and cause damage to the lungs.

It can also cause headaches and irritation and eyes, according to the University of Hawaii.

'Because of their small size, aerosol particles such as those in vog penetrate deep into the human lung and are readily retained,' the USGS says.

And where there's vog, there is acid rain.

If trade winds drop, experts are predicting vog and acid rain to fall in the north of the island.

Acid rain can cause damage to crops, as well as metal objects such as cars and farm equipment - causing them to rust.

There is little evidence that acid rain can lasting damage humans if they are caught out in a downpour. The harm to people s comes from the acid rain's ability to leach dangerous metals from pipes, plumbing or building materials.

If it gets into the rainwater-catchment system that Hawaii residents use for drinking water, it could pose a serious risk.

A study in 1988 found that almost 40 per cent of homes in Hawaii's Kona Districts had lead contaminated drinking water, caused by acid rain, according to the US Geological Survey. The tests also found elevated lead levels in the blood of some residents. Lead poisoning has numerous serious symptoms and can even be fatal.

Prayers for everyone and everything in harms way. It’s hard to believe this is happening to the beautiful island of Hawaii. DH and I took the helicopter excursion over Kilauea and saw the destruction from from previous lava flows. We saw lava flowing at night from our ship 🚢. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I am following this. While nature is fascinating and beautiful    the people are having a really difficult time.

Wrong is still wrong just because you benefited from it.

@KingstonsMom

I wonder if this warning is for the one large island or for all?

Re: Still Praying for Hawaii

The trade winds are expected to switch to southeasterly winds for a couple days so the entire island chain will be affected by the vog.
