Stars and Other Luminaries From Ukraine

[ Edited ]

[I've known that Mila Kunis was born in Ukraine for quite a while, and I was aware that the Chmerkovskiy brothers hailed from there, too, but I wondered who else was born there.  Was I ever surprised to learn that the great Sophie Tucker was born in Ukraine as was the head of my favorite Hollywood studio (MGM), Louis B. Mayer.  I included names that rang a bell for me.  Perhaps you can add others.]

Mila Kunis

Sergei Prokofiev

Karina Smirnoff

Louis B. Mayer

Joseph Conrad

Maksim Chmerkovskiy

Valentin Chmerkovskiy

Leon Trotsky

Oksana Baiul

@golding76

Wow, that's quite a list ....  how interesting.

As for the country, I looked something up the other day, since I don't know a lot about it.     Ukraine is approximately the size of Texas.

Match?

The news report this morning said they were giving, no mention of matching funds....there is a difference.

I applaud them either way, but was just wondering which story is accurate.

From Entertainment Weekly, the story is picked up by numerous outlets:

The couple is matching up to $3 million in donations on GoFundMe for a relief effort to help people who have had to flee Ukraine because of the Russian invasion. The actors are partnering with flexport.org and airbnb.org for the fundraiser, which has a goal of generating $30 million.

As of Thursday night, the GoFundMe fundraiser, started just seven hours earlier, had already raised $2,908,500.

Dimitri Tiomkin is one of my heroes. A composer, he wrote so many wonderful film scores and songs. Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling from High Noon; The High and the Mighty; Friendly Persuasion and many, many more.

Well, yes, there is a difference.  The point of matching is to encourage others to contribute.

If they just donate, it's $3 mil.   If others donate and they match, it could be $6 mil or more.  With this couple's social media savvy, I think a lot of donations will be made far beyond $3 million.

Well obviously @Tinkrbl44

I know the point and know fully how it works.  Snark was not necessary.

I was looking for clarification since my news reported it differently.

My news station reported that the couple made a 3 million dollar donation.

NO mention of a match, NO mention of looking for donors to join, NO mention of Go Fund me!

Geez, what is your issue?

Thank you @Johnnyeager  for the clarification.
