Coffee houses traditionally are where people go to hang out and relax. Think of Greenwich Village or the cafes in Paris. That is the experience many Starbucks try to emulate. There are some coffee houses near me that have live music and local artists exhibiting their work. We spend too much time rushing around thinking our lives are more meaningful or important than anyone else's. We need to learn to stop and smell the roses, or in this case, smell the coffee.

yes! My local coffee shop is just like that - they have art on their wall from local artists and every tuesday night, they have either live music or poetry readings. This is in a small town too. It is always crowded, people will share tables if there is no room - it helps provide a sense of community
fantastic post.
Also, I know that the starbucks near my job - sometimes our main generator will blow out for some reason, and even though there is a backup, its primary duty is for the computer room, so power is in limited resource for the rest of the building. Some of us will go to starbucks and the other coffee shops in the area (we have many) that have wifi, to work on our computers until the power is fully restored.

starbucks squatters - lol
seriously, all coffee houses are like this. It isn't just starbucks. Obviously, this culture is not for you.
you cannot eat or drink in a public library. That is why Starbucks and bookstores encourage customers to hang out and use their wifi.
it seems to be a business model that works very well and I am sure there are other places you can go instead if this bothers you so much. Even the big bookstore B&N has a starbucks cafe right inside of its store - that is how popular and how WANTED those "squatters" are

I agree.
I just have to wonder how the OP knows the people she is complaining about are there for "hours" unless she has been there for "hours" herself. Is this a situation of give me a seat because I want to sit down and linger over MY coffee? Kind of sounds like that bugaboo word "entitlement" , doesn't it?
I can think of lots of things to get upset about. People kicking back and enjoying a very leisurely cup of coffee and a snack at Starbuck's is not one of them.
