Re: Starbucks' Cup Controversy

I'll tell you what angers me...the fact that people, including some political candidates, refuse to think about or discuss really important issues facing our country and instead focus on the trivial. I happen to dislike Starbuck's coffee. It's strong, bitter, and overpriced. I couldn't care less what cup they serve it in. I do care that this so-called war on Christmas is nonsense. Just look around you. As soon as the first leaf changes color, out come all the Christmas decorations. What's been lost is what Christmas is really about. It's not about Starbuck's cups.

Re: Starbucks' Cup Controversy

Just saw this online.  I may have other issues with the Starbucks corporation but, in this case, the packaging seems to be a running minimalist theme for 2015.  The coffee bean package pretty much confirms they don't hate Christmas.

This is EXACTLY how I feel.  When I first heard about it I honestly thought it was some kind of a joke.  Then when I realized it was serious, I said to my DH that out of all the things going on, this is what someone decides to take a stand about?  A Starbuck's cup?

People want what they always put on them: Mery Christmas.

Starbuks has never put "Merry Christmas" on a cup. Some have had snowmen. I saw one that said "Wish" and "Hope". But no "Merry Christmas".

I think the "internet evangelist" who started this contraversey was trying to drumb up publicity for himself. Christians are supposed to live lives that point people to Christ and make them want to know the God we say we serve. This does not do that.

Very true, they never had specific Christmas references and I think what you said is exactly what happened.

(And by the way, along with their Christmas coffee blend they offer an Advent calendar for anyone interested.)

I don't understrand the big deal.  The U.S. is lucky.  We have freedom of religion and freedom FROM religioin.  Shall we be like Poland?  Their public schools have crucifixes on the all the wall.  Not even a plain cross to keep Protestants happy.  Leave cups alone.

I think the Starbucks frenzy is representative of a larger problem but that silly cup seems to have assumed the position of that last straw on the camel's back.  People are just tired of having their beliefs cast aside in order to accomodate the wishes of the few who might find them offensive.  Political correctness has gone amouck and "offend no one" is the mantra of the day now so people are perceiving that plain red cup as just one more indication that their christian beliefs are being trampled on.    To them the red cup says "we don't celebrate Christmas anymore".  True or not, that's the perception and that percepton is what's driving the frenzy.

Store clerks no longer saying Merry Christmas, schools being prevented from having Christmas plays or singing Christmas carols, nativities no longer welcome in town squares...stuff like that gets under people's skin and has been for years.  I don't have any problem with the cups being plain red, especially since I don't patronize Starbucks, but to those people who do, I say "cast your vote with your wallet".  If you find the red cup offensive, start getting your coffee someplace else and if it's ok with you then get a muffin with your maccioto.   Sometimes you have to just pick your battles.

Re: Starbucks' Cup Controversy

Well to me, so many xmas products are left on the shelves of so many stores.  Even greatly discounted they don't sell. It's a one day a year thing and who wants to use some things xmasy in March or the rest of the year.  They just may have done what they did for that reason.

It's nothing to get unnerved about.  Whomever is unhappy needs to do other things with their time and crab about something else.

Re: Starbucks' Cup Controversy

Every Christmas season, some people get all bent out of shape. Booo someone said "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". Some people look for reasons to be offended. This time it's a cup. Omg, how silly IMO. If a cup or phrase of well wishes ruins your Christmas then that's pretty darn sad.
