Re: Sponsors dropping The View

[ Edited ]

There are three generations of nurses in my family and extended family. While they weren't particularly offended by JB's comment (most shrugged it off and attributed it to stupidity and not as deliberately derogatory) they are on a daily basis offended by the stereotypes nurses have created among themselves depending on the speciality (or duration in job). There is an uncomfortable hierarchy that is seldom addressed.

I think the sponsors were looking for a reason to scamble off a sinking ship.  Perfect opportunity to jump and come out smelling like a rose to some.  Can't blame them.  Smiley Happy

That was exactly my thought in my post earlier on this thread.  So you are agreeing?

Of course I haven't read the contract that the advertisers have with The View, but I really do suspect that some of the advertisers are using Behar's remarks to bail on the show because of low ratings - that they otherwise couldn't get out of their contract but for some language in it about being able to pull out of the contract for something offensive happening on the show.  I'm thinking this incident is an excuse the advertisers are using to abandon a sinking ship and still not break their contract.

I think part of it is one's own observations .....

I have a fair amount of doctors appointments, and, in that setting, I never see a nurse wearing a stethoscope .... never.

Perhaps nurses who work in hospitals  (and maybe nursing homes?)  walk around with one, but I don't even remember the last time I was in a hospital .... knock on wood.

Of the 4 different Doctors offices that I visit, all of the nurses wear a stethoscope.

After reading these replies and some of the anger from nurses on other websites, it makes me a bit nervous to do any talking while sick and partially in a nurse's care.  I might actually not know every aspect of their job and I might say something inaccurate.  Will they take it as an insult?  I choose my doctors but I don't get to choose my nurses.  I've had some wonderful ones and a few that were very bad.  It's kind of a cr@p shoot and, now that I realize how much resentment nurses CAN feel, I wonder if we should go to a system where everyone can choose ALL of the medical staff that works with them.  Just a thought.

It's also clear to me that some are hearing and reading through their own filters.  For example, someone responded to a previous post I wrote, saying that the discussion wasn't about teachers when, in fact, I was responding to her post in which she clearly brought up nurses v. teachers, lawyers, and the like.  She didn't seem to be aware, when reading my post, of what she had actually said.  Some of it is definitely my fault because I didn't know how to "quote" a post (I do now) but some of it was a perfect example of how many see/hear what they want to, whatever gives them payback of some kind.  I do think that is what is happening with what Joy said, too.

Well, I think you are over reacting....I mentioned teachers but was not comparing the teaching profession to the nursing profession, just situations   There are good and bad in every profession.  As a matter of fact, I remember the teachers who made an impact on my life from grammar school through advanced degree programs and I remember the miserable ones as well.  As a head nurse and supervisor, I have fired nurses I considered  dangerous and that is one advantage when you work in the nursing field.  I am very selective about my physicians because they too are not all equal thus, their nurses are excellent; so that is my advice.  And, as a patient, if I see conduct or technique I disapprove of, I report it.    If a disparaging remark were made about teachers on TV, I certainly would defend them (as stated many teachers in my family)  but it wasn't; it was made about nurses.   I practiced for 50 years and loved every moment ...and, I imagine being a teacher, you love it as well.  It was hurtful to hear my profession mocked and responded as a nurse and expressed my opinions and feelings as a nurse.  It is ludicrous to make the incident about nurses vs teachers; I cited my current profession as well; what you face as a teacher, lawyer, engineer, sales person, mail person and let's not forget what police face today is quite different from what you face as a nurse; they all have ups and downs, pros and cons; different situations.....Quite frankly, I left clinical nursing because I wanted more of a personal life, not one working 12 hours with  24/7 on call.  The only anger people feel is towards a bunch of thoughtless, uneducated women making hurtful and careless remarks about a person representing a group of hard working people, largely women.  I was fortunate and have obtained three advanced degrees in addition to a nursing degree.  So, I have been exposed to a variety of teachers in various fields and was encouraged to pursue my dreams by teachers.  So you are quite incorrect.  It is not I who is expressing anger?  People express opinions because they have feelings about a subject based on emotion and feelings....that is life....how we think.....yes, there is a collective anger expressed by nurses as a whole from around the country toward the "ladies on the view" not at other professions or people with opposite views....it would indeed be boring if we all thought alike.  If Joy made a disparaging remark about teachers, maybe you would react in a different way? Who knows? But, it is clear by your previous statements that you are unhappy about how you have been treated by parents? Your community?  Perhaps, you feel you have not been given your due respect as a teacher? Your privacy invaded by being asked why you are off?  I understand that so I would think you could understand our issues and sympathize about a lack of respect for any admirable profession or a person representing one.

Oh I agree with you there.  There are a lot of problems within the profession itself and we don't self police and take action.  But that brings home the point....many nurses are hard working excellent professionals and people and often, with little room for advancement due to politics in an institution, the hierarchy and just limited opportunities in general....that lends to the frustration we feel as nurses and feelings that we are not respected because no matter how hard we work and strive to give the care our patients need, we may not ever achieve our personal goals...so that remark is hurtful to many because it strikes a collective nerve for many reasons...so I stand in support with the nurses unite movement because nurses do need to unite to make change within the profession itself and perceptions to people outside the profession.

This show is a total train wreck, but isn't going anywhere as long as they keep pushing libs and as long as they keep getting headlines (good or bad)!

I haven't watched the show since Elisabeth left, but I knew bringing joy back would be a disaster as her mouth is loud and obnoxious - and I was right!

Re: Sponsors dropping The View

I doubt the show will fold like many seem to want because of the perceptions many have of the show and the politics of a few of the hosts, both liberal and conservative. Even tho lots of sponsors left Rush aftr his comments in the past his show is still on and he still offends many every single day.

Re: Sponsors dropping The View

I think the show will fold but as others suggested, the controversy might be used as an excuse to dump a show with plummeting ratings for other reasons.
