We had been without a working landline for more than 2 years. We had Verizon repairmen come out numerous times through the years since we lived here. They would get the landline working for awhile and then it would stop working.
The first thing the last repairman said to my husband was "if I have to come into your house, it will cost you $300". We know it wasn't a problem inside the house and my husband explained that the problem has always been the line to the house. The repairman got the landline working but it stopped working about 2 days later.
So we had given up having a landline.
Suddenly last week we started getting phone calls on our landline. Everyone we want to talk to have been using our cell phone numbers. So the only people now calling on our landline are people trying to make us take out a loan, buy something or wanting us to contribute money.
But the calls on the landline start at 8 AM. I even got one call at 7 AM. Aren't they supposed to wait until 9 AM? I live on the east coast. So it isn't time zone issues. Or am I mistaken about when they can call?

I don't understand. Did you keep and pay for the landline even though it wasn't working, @drizzellla?

I am not sure when they can call, but we have the same issues with our landline. I turn the ringer, and answering machine off every night when we go to bed, and then turn it back on when we are awake, and ready for the day. This way I am in control no matter how early they start. We get numerous unwanted calls, and I never answer, They hang up when the answering machine kicks in.

Yes, it was part of our "internet and FIOS package".

So if everyone is using your cell phone number to get in touch unplug the landline or turn the ringer off.

Good idea!
Since we didn't have a landline in 2 years, we unplugged all the extention phones. The only phone still ringing is the wall phone in the kitchen. Maybe we should unplug the kitchen wall phone and do what you do with an extension phone and answering machine.
I would like to have the landline working. Several family members have health issues. And I usually just keep my cell phone in my purse and if I leave my purse in the bedroom I do miss calls on occasion.
With the landline it will state a hospital/Doctor name instead of just a phone number.

@drizzellla , I like to have my cell phone and one of the cordless landline phones on the nightstand at night for security reasons. If I need to make a call they are both there.

We also have our cell phones and landlines next to the bed at night.

@drizzellla I had somebody call at 7am once and I reported them to my state hotline for spam calls. You might want to try a google search for a reporting number for your location.

Thanks - another good idea.
