Because people are dangerously saying that there is no virus, we've got some really dangerous behavior going on. As a way of showing loyalty to the idea that nothing is acutally happening, you've got people taking no precautions at all and saying no one needs to be tested and that it's all a fake. Even coughing without covering their mouths and sharing water bottles. Kids are going to copy their parents.

Even if they don't get and spread Covid-19 (God willing), they're going to pass around the flu and colds, and possibly worse stuff.

It's like a weird fake bravado thing to refuse to take this seriously. "Oh yeah? You fake person trying to tell me what to think. I'll show you by doing the exact opposite of what you are recommending."

I'm referring to regular people doing this in response to what they see from their favorite sources of information.

I believe this to be virus-related.

Can the hosts STOP all this kissing and hugging. The other day a virologist on a news program suggested we may want to reconsider even shaking hands if the spread gets worse.

I think QVC should give this policy serious thought.

Re: Something to consider (virus-related)

One of my sons related the essence of this article to me last night.  No, he was not quoting from this article.  Apparently the reddit site has been abuzz for days about the extreme vulnerability of the U.S. to the Covid-19 virus ("covid-19", to some).

Why is our country so ripe for mass illness and death?  Because of the U.S.'s work-centered culture and lack of affordable health care.   This is what the chatter is about.  I was told that many are gleeful that we will suffer from our emphasis on economy over the humane.  That is despicable, if it is, indeed, true that many abroad are awaiting a huge swell of suffering and death in our nation because of what are, admittedly, not the most civilized practices for a good and healthy life.

In any case, it might be that we will pay dearly for our ways.  Too many folks are unable to take off from work; that is a truth.  Too many people cannot afford health care; that, too, is a truth.

Let's hope and pray that such a apocalypse does not come to pass.

I haven't heard anyone say there is no virus.  However, at this point, it doesn't seem as widespread as regular flu - and certainly not as bad as the H1N1 that killed thousands of people in the US in 2009 - many before any official action was taken at all.

That administration declared it a national emergency in October 2009.  The public received frequent independent briefings.  Most of us over the age of 60 had antibodies from previous exposure.

@tansy @Snoopp .

I was going to say the same thing.

So many workers, nurses, many lower income jobs only have for example 3 paid sick leave days per year, and if more taken are "written up", warnings, and also after that may lose their jobs.

Only business owners, higher paid execs, etc etc have the "common sense" and luxury to stay home!!

It makes me so mad when the newscasters say, stay home in inclement weather! Tell that to the nurse supervisor, mgr, restaurant owner to his waitstaff etc etc.

Not all are afforded the luxury of staying home when sick unless they want to have no job at all!

See the vast differences in how people live and work in this country.

Never assume that if one is doing well, that so many others are not!

they don't have enough testing kits here because they didn't start ordering them in December and January when it started spreading in other countries

because  he got rid of most of the CDC staff that would handle an outbreak like this

Jishie,

I read the other day that the Catholic Church is suggesting that fist bumps, elbow bumps, the peace sign et al. replace the traditonal handshake when wishing peace to one's fellow parishioners.

The other week I attended my local Catholic Church instead of my church.  Since I had been coughing intemittently, I decided not to shake hands and just use that closed-palm namaskar along with a smile.   It went over pretty well.

@suzyQ3   Thanks for posting this LA Times article.  Went to the site and read the entire thing there and then bookmarked it.

Very serious, inciteful article, and well researched.

Glad I am retired and from a wonderful union benefits job.  So many others in the workplace are not as fortunate.
