Something just occurred that is so strange.

I was posting on the Health and Fitness forum regarding Sonicare toothbrushes.

No sooner then I submitted my reply, I got an email alert that I had received a email from Phillips Sonicare in my personal account. Now I am registered with them to receive information, but the coincidence to get an email while I am participating on a QVC forum is just bizarre to me.

What do you all think? Is there some way they can track anytime you mention their products and then generate an email?

Yes.

It's a form of advertising.

If you click on a story about an accident...PI attorneys show up too.

Thanks Terrier. I should have realized this, but it never happened before and I was taken aback. I use different email addresses, my personal email address is not what I use on the Q, however if Phillips uses a monitoring system universally it would generate an email to my personal account. I guess I should go in and change my privacy settings on their and other websites.

I don't like this new way of getting their advertising. It happened to me the other day with a qvc product. I went in and changed my email settings here.

It's bad enough to see that on every page you visit after you look at something but your personal email is too much!

I have a notion if this happens again I will not purchase any product that shows up unrequested in my email.

Re: Something just occurred that is so strange.

I use Outlook for my email and "AdChoices" takes up a couple of inches on the right hand side making it impossible to adequately view what is in my email. I don't know how to get rid of it either. Every time I look at a retail site, the company I visit has their ad showing up some where on on othere sites I visit.

There are too many ads every where these days.

Targeted advertising is all over the place. If you think you're "surfing in private", you're probably naive. There are a lot of "tracking cookies" out there; advertisers are watching where you shop and surf and sending you ads keyed to your interests. Kinda unsettling, but there it is.

Thanks for the replies. There are so many tracking methods out there it is hard to keep up. Normally I don't care, it is just the way it is. But its the ones that I don't know are tracking that concern me. I go thru my Safari preferences sites daily that have stored cookies, etc. but once they have your ISP or email address its almost gets almost impossible to control. Delete will become my friend or I will start surfing in the private mode if it get out of hand.

Are you using the free Hotmail? If you pay for your Hotmail account, you can get rid of the ads.

You got an email from the company after posting on a thread here?

So they have access to your email from the Q? I don't like that.

There is no such thing as private surfing.

It all is tracked...which is why the web is free to consumers.
