It has been getting excessive this time of year that they want to sell something to you or collect donations. The fire dept. came here on Saturday while we were fixing a fallen Christmas decoration outside and asked us for donations (I give them a donation every year and told him so). The fireman said to me that is great you donate to us but can you give me something today extra?
Today alone I had 10 people ring my doorbell and knocked very loudly numerous times. In fact the same man came here 3 days in a row (Sat, Sun, Mon) in regular clothes (same colored neon green jacket). A few months ago I decided not to answer the door anymore. Sometimes (rarely) I will open the window in front of the house and ask them what they want. We had another robbery this week in our neighborhood and I discussed it with hubby that I would like to install a camera security system. I am home alone while he is at work.
How do do you deal with solicitors?
I put up a 6' wrought iron fence with a key-locking gate. Costly, but very effective. I sleep better. Had preachers, salesmen, kids selling magazines, and people coming after dark for "directions".....some as late as 2 a.m. (and there's a 24 hour gas station right down the road.)

@BabyYoda I despise them! I don't answer my phone unless I am expecting a call and if it is a telemarketer, I sternly tell them not to call this number. In my previous home, I wouldn't answer the door. In this house, too much walking and up hill areas for them to bother coming, in fact, I wouldn't answer the door for anyone unless I was expecting them, just would not acknowledge the bell or knocking. You could also put up a large sign saying no solicitors allowed. Too bad you couldn't call the police for the ones who keep harassing you. They have some nerve!

You don't have to open the door. (I don't)

They would bang on my front door with their fists, so hard that my windows rattled..................

I have a nice "No Solicitors" sign hanging on my door, but solicitors can't read. I do one of these things depending on my mood:
1. Answer the door, point to the no soliciting sign and close the door.
2. Don't answer the door at all.
3. Open the door with a shotgun in hand and state: "Get off of my property".
4. Call the police that there are solicitors in the neighorhood and they will run them off.
The police told me chances are they are scoping out the neighborhood for a potential burglary.
BTW, I live in a gated community. Don't ask me how they get in.

I no longer answer the door when I'm alone, either. I've read about an incident in our town where a lady was scammed: A man came to the door and told her a tree had to come down in her backyard and asked her to come out and check it out. While she was gone, somebody entered her bedroom and stole jewelry and cash. Such a shame.

I've never lived in a neighborhood where they went door to door that frequently. Let's put it this way - if they chose to ignore my "no soliciting" sign, their encounter with me would not be very pleasant. I can guarantee they would not be back to my door. Very serious here.

Luckily, I don't have a problem in the townhouse complex where I live -- except in the summer, when kids try to hawk their candy. I never buy because I've seen cars drop them off and have them go door to door.
if it were I, I'd call my police department or city administrative offices and report this. Many places have ordinances against this kind of solicitation. One wonders if they are "casing" the neighborhood, looking to see who is home and when.

I bought a No Soliciting sign to hang on our front door. I chose one on Etsy that looked nice so the HOA wouldn’t complain. Some guy knocked on our door anyway. I pointed to the sign and he said, “but I’m not selling anything”. He was clearly looking for donations and/or information for his group. That experience made me buy another sign from Etsy that now states: No Soliciting, Especially if you’re “not selling anything”. Time will tell if it works.
