Social Security and Medicare are entitlements because those who have paid into the system for the required number of quarters are entitled to receive these benefits without means testing. In this case entitlement is NOT a derogatory term.

I heard somebody say they were going to cut down the folks on the high end of SS as you mentioned above @50Mickey . Are you aware of this possibility?  I've heard about the 600 reporting to the IRS, but, I think this gal listens to conspiracy theory nonsense.

Been on SS for 20 years now. Last year was the 1st year my monthly SS check reached $1300. So with $1500 being the average, and mine being over $200 less per month, what is the highest paid SS per month to those bringing the average to $1500?

My wife has been on SS for 6 years and her payment is less than my $1300. Hmmm!

Re: Social security increase for 2022

@feline groovy    Because the highest SS benefit is $3895 and this goes to those who have at least 35 years of very high earnings.

Re: Social security increase for 2022

@feline groovy I agree! Most people still working probably won't even get SS or ANY benefits. And let's not even get into pensions. Most jobs nowadays do not have pensions, nor haven't even offered that option if you joined the workforce in the past 20-30+ years. So crying about your "fixed income" on ss & most likely pension, etc. is crying me a tiny violin. Be THANKFUL you have those things. Most younger people (even 40-50 year olds) have none of those, nor ever will. Rant over.

@feline groovy

Mine after Medicare deducted is 1512.  I receive my exhusband's 26 years ago.  He died and we were divorced, but had been married for over 10 years.  He made good money, I didn't, so i took his, which of course was higher than mine.

SS didn't tell me this, but i had sent away for a booklet just before I was ready to retire and discoved it myself.

He was married at the time of his passing, but that doesn't matter, at least back then.  They are now both deceased, but that doesn't increase mine.

I started 26 years ago at 1013 after deduction of medicare, so I increased 499 in 26 years

Re: Social security increase for 2022

@50Mickey

Thank you for the info. One thing for sure, nobody ever mistook me for being a "high earner," which I assume is well into the 6 figures.

Close to 4 grand a month from SS was twice what I was making working. If I had earned that much to get that kind of SS every month?  It would go to a few of my favorite charities for sure.

As used by "those that be", they chose to use the word Entitlement as "me" getting something for doing nothing. There are tons of better words in their book of terms they could use for "giving you back money you earned that "they", used interest free, for decades.

Appreciate getting a bit more knowledge when it comes to this SS business.

I read the post @50 mickey replied to me. What she said was surprising, no shocking, to me. Guess I forgot those that knock down 6 and 7 figures a year, pay SS.
