I've also heard an expert say that you should apply as early as possible because you might not live to reach retirement age.

@Sage04 that's why I did it. At least I would get back some, if not all, of what I had paid into it. The other way, no one would benefit from it meaning spousal benefits would not be greater than what my husband would get on his own account.
