Do you supply your SS# when applying for a position?

Some places, I find, are very forward thinking and state that you do not need to supply your SS until you are hired. Other places, the staff becomes really upset (and hit the controlling button) if you suggest they don't need it at this time.

I find it very disconcerting to supply the SS number at job fairs. A person I knew found that the contact at the job fair left all the applications in a cab....so much for care of private information.

The other situation I find I back off on is filling out on-line applications, on the company's site, and being asked for my SS. Some companies do not ask for this info.
