Re: So, who knows about Mohs????

No personal experience, but two very good friends had surgeons do Moh's surgery for them. One actually feared she'd need to have her nose rebuilt and doing surgery carefully a tiny bit at a time as Moh's does, was able to save her nose and get rid of the cancer. Her scars easily cover with makeup. More recently the other friend had two larger cancers removed via the procedure with great results.

The experience and skill of the surgeon as well as the patient following instructions precisely are all needed for a great result which I certainly wish for you, OP.

Re: So, who knows about Mohs????

I tried posting this morning and thought I was banned. I even went and signed on to 3 other computers in the house and everything was the same, so I figured it was the site.{#emotions_dlg.huh}

Anyway, a quickie to say I heard from the Mohs office first thing this a.m. and they said they got all my medical information and pathology reports from the Derm. that he sent to them when we were there yesterday. I was going to call them after I had my coffee anyway. Sooooo, she was able to get me in next Tuesday, March 4th at 1 pm. She asked me if I had any preference as to a doctor and since I don't know any of them, I told her whichever one had the first opening. There are three in that office.

Then, I called my Primary doctor (Cardio/Internal Medicine) to see what he had to say and he said he is very familiar with that group - they are very well-known and know what they're doing.{#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}(I would hope)....... One of the girls in his office had a procedure done and she was very happy with her results. I meant to ask if he had any other options for me but I hung up before I thought about asking.. I will call tomorrow just for the heck of it and see what he has to say about that.

So now, I just wait until Tuesday. I wonder if he'll take a biopsy that day or will there be another appt. for that? {#emotions_dlg.confused1}

Again, thanks to all of you for your great responses. I really felt a lot better when I signed off last night. Smile

I will probably have a dent or at least a scar, right?? I mean, if they're going to be scraping and maybe scraping many times, how could I be scarless???

I suppose the alternative is to do nothing, and just let the skin cancer grow.

Scars are better.

I fell on my face 3 years ago and needed a lot of stiches around my mouth (my teeth came thru the skin).

A dent or a bump can be easily corrected with cortisone shots. I needed 4 shots total - they can't give you too much or you will end up with an indentation.

There are all kinds of fillers for indentations too.

I'm confused by your question and just wanted to make sure you understood what's going on unless I misunderstood your question.

You said the Moh's office received your pathology report from your derm. That means your derm already did a biopsy and the result was BCC. Right? You said your Moh's appointment is scheduled for Tuesday, March 4th. That appointment is presumably to do the surgery to remove the entire BCC, so there is no need for another biopsy. It has already been biopsied to show that it's BCC.

Maybe my wording was wrong? My Dermatologist took a biopsy in November. A few days later, he called to tell me it was BCC. During that same period, I fell and fractured my hip, so things were put on hold. Now, I am over the hip thing and called the Derm. to tell him I am ready for treatment. He told me to come in and he would look at it and maybe he could remove it - if not there are other options.

When he saw where it was, he said he wouldn't/couldn't touch it there and he recommended the Mohs group, or radiation. He explained both and at the same time, he sent the Mohs people my information and pathology report from the lab. He also explained how the radiation is done at the hospital - going every single day for X number of days. He was pushing for the Mohs though....

This appointment next Tuesday, is for a "consult" only. The doctor will explain exactly what the procedure is, look at it and if I decide to go ahead with Mohs, then I will tell him. My Derm told me that the Mohs doctor will take a biopsy of his own but I don't know if he will do it on Tuesday, or there will be another appointment....

Re: So, who knows about Mohs????

Oh, wait, I got it now. The actual procedure is a biopsy. Duh...... Now, I don't know what is going to be done on Tuesday. Maybe just a consult to see if that is the way I want to go.....

I think I mis-understood my Derm. and his choice of words. I don't think I was thinking clearly at that time because my husband was looking for a picture of my nose that he "thought" he took and he kept clicking the darn camera and I was very distracted. BTW, he never found the picture because I remember telling him to delete all those pictures of my nose. LOL

Re: So, who knows about Mohs????

I had Mohs done about 25 years ago when there were just about 100 Drs. in the NYC area who knew how to do this. I was extremely lucky as I had the head of the Dermatology Dept. at Columbia Presb. Hospital do it. I had a very large Squamous Cell carcinoma on my forehead. I originally went to a local Dr. in NJ (where I lived at the time) - who did not know how to do Mohs - and this Dr. scared me to death. He was very abrupt and drew what looked like a swastika on my forehead. He said it was deep and the size was round and he had to cut it all out. My eyebrow might be permanently raised and there was the possibility I would not be able to close my eye. Can you imagine?! I was hysterical crying. When I went to work the next day (in NY, Wall Street Area) I was referred to the Dr. at Columbia by someone who was on the Board and was told he is one of the best. I had the Mohs, it did not hurt as they numb the area. He had to make a long line, and within a few weeks, there was no trace of a scar or anything. This procedure is incredible as it gets out the cells that are affected, like a clock, one by one. It is so important to go to the best Dr. you can find in this and any field. I was very fortunate. For me, if I ever get this again I will definitely get Mohs.
