New York Times columnist Anand Giridharadas calls " so " the
new " um " and " like " others call it a plague and a fad.

If you ever watch Shark Tank you'll notice that when each contestant is instructed to begin their spiel, they start with the word "so." It's kind of weird considering "so" is so out of place in that situation.

On his radio program, Le Show, Harry Shearer has a segment called "Just Say So" in which he highlights interviews in which "so" is gratuitously used to excess. The interviews are often from NPR and the subjects are well-educated - business people, academics, politicians, etc. It's kind of funny; often times the subject starts every response with "so."

THAT'S IT! That's partially my world you listed! I started to notice it there, then it started cropping up all over tv interviews. Now it is rampant. Do you think it is regional or started that way? I began to notice it about four years ago. It's very strange when someonen is asked a question and the first word out of their mouth is "SO. . . "
Ah! SO it's not just me! LOL!!!!!

I have a girlfriend who ends her statements with "and so". She's an Ivy League grad. I'd go get my money back if I were her.

The word so doesn't bother me. What sets my nerves on edge, is the over use of "you know", when people say "you know" after ever second or third word.

I would have thought it was "awesome" just from my personal experiences hearing it ad nauseum. I've even been challenging it lately. For instance when at the grocery store the youthful bagger says, "paper or plastic?" and I say "paper" he/she responds "awesome." My reply is "really?do you honestly think choosing paper over plastic rises to the level of being 'awesome?' "
I would think the two most overused words are "you know" which is a horrid "filler" when people don't know what to say, esp. on live TV. No, I don't know, that's why you are supposed to be informing me.
