The title of the thread did say "world", right?  Not just this board or the internet in general.

The world.

If this thread is just about being nicer to people, well, sure, who isn't in favor of that?  Oh, nevermind..................

Guess it goes back to lessons learned as a child......if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all,

Is that what you meant by your opening question?

I thought you were asking why there is so much negativity in the world, which, to my mind, is quite a different question..

Re: So much negativity in the world

Interesting topic. I have developed a few special, 'safe' places in my life where healthy, reasonable people dwell. Desperately need those in today's society. I'm learning to push away from negative neds and nellies. I used to think I could change people or I'd fixate on wishing 'things' or people were different. Now I'm better able to 'accept the things I cannot change." Freedom in that.

@QueenDanceALot, I've read similar threads to this one probably once a month since I signed up eons ago. I've never quite understood the motivation. other than that sometimes it's a result of a poster having felt, rightly or wrongly, that she or he was unfairly targeted. In this case, the OP mentions the world, but as you can see, the thread is narrowing down to this little part of the world.

I mean, seriously, who's going to come out for negativity? It's a banal statement. Besides, as you so astutely point out, what definition are we using? To some, negativity means you didn't like what they said. To others, it means a personal insult. Who knows? I think around here is often just means that someone's feelings were hurt because their opinion was not agreed upon wholeheartedly.

Whatever it means, though, I have yet to see a thread like this succeed in anything other than devolving into the same-old, same-old arguments. Yes, we can all pat ourselves on the back and recommend positivity -- until the next time we feel that we need to defend our position. And I always have found that quite a few of the participants preach one thing on a thread like this and act in quite another way the rest of the time.

Back to the world, though: I am depending upon positive negativity to get us through. :-)

@DiAnne  I was taught the same thing.  To me, both are a personal choice and should be treated as such.

My original mind set had nothing to do with this board, it was from twitter and facebook posts I had come across recently.  But there are those who feel the need to judge people negatively everywhere

Re: So much negativity in the world

Just yesterday we honored the life of a great man who profoundly affected the lives of so many and who was a catalyst for great social change.

He did not always say 'positive' things.  He often said things that outraged people, that made some hate him.

Should he not have spoken out on things he saw to be unacceptable so as not to upset anyone?

I don't think so.

I heard that as a child, but think about it.  Politics affects our lives in just about every way, it would be silly never to discuss it with your family or others.  We take classes on it in high school and college.  It's all over the news, we can listen but not speak?

Religion is an important part of history, the core of most cultures, wars even.  There is no way to learn history without also learning how religion has played a part in life.

Don't recall a time when he went after individuals.    He was about making things better, not tearing people apart for the fun.

Not saying these topics can and should be discussed, it can be done in a civil way.  To often it all degrades into personal attacks.

I was just attempting to understand what exactly you were talking about.

I get it.  @suzyQ3 was right on about what's happening here.
