So I ordered one of those DNA/Genetic tests...

Be prepared to be related to me  Smiley TongueSmiley Very Happy

Actually I was shocked by the pages and pages of disclaimers warning me that the results could really be upsetting and completely unexpected.  They are not responsible for that.

So I texted my family:  "Speak any long hidden family secrets now or be prepared for my legal action later."

My mother's text response back:  "I am your father" complete with an avatar of Darth Vader.  She then moved on to a Captain Kirk and Spock GIF.

I will PAY good money to not come back as related to these people.  Good money!

[ Edited ]

I have several relatives in my family who do geneology but my brother decided to take a test when his wife did...figured no surprises.

Found out that either my maternal grandfather or great-grandfather had an "illegitimate" daughter that we never knew about. My brother was contacted by one of the her grandchildren.

My sister's family was stunned by the fact that they were significantly Irish. They are long-time members of the DAR, and many of their known ancestors are German and Mennonite/Amish. Apparently the older members of the family were horrified by this news....my adult neice's comment was "Weird, archaic racisms die super hard apparently"

After my friend found out her father was not her biological father through one of these tests, I’m now not surprised by the disclaimers.

No surprises for me though when I did one.

Re: So I ordered one of those DNA/Genetic tests...

I am actually expecting to find a little Irish in me @CinNC.  Although supposedly I am Italian/Sicilian mainly with a French great grandmother who married an Italian and set sail for America. She had two red headed sons.  St. Patrick's may be a brand new holiday to me.

And I haven't seen my biological father in decades.  Last I knew he was on his fourth or fifth marriage.  If I have even more siblings than the ones I have now, it won't shock me.

Lay your bets now...

@Laura14 - which company did you choose for the testing? I hope any surprises are good!

@Laura14   One of these companies was hacked not long ago.  People are left wondering what info was taken.    Then there is this.  https://gizmodo.com/what-dna-testing-companies-terrifying-privacy-policies-1819158337

I did 23andMe @CinNC because I honestly really want the medical information.  The ethnicity I could care less about and I think I pretty much know what I am being only a 3rd generation American.

Thank you @esmeraldagooch.  I've already been hacked by Blue Cross and Equifax.  If someone wants my DNA, have at it.

Re: So I ordered one of those DNA/Genetic tests...

Two tests that I did had conflicting results, either 8-10% British Isles or 8-10% Iberian Peninsula. Given that there was migration from the Iberian Peninsula to Britain, both assessments could be right. However, I just tested with a third service to break the tie, so to speak. If they come up with yet another background, I’ve decided to ignore all of them.
