They said this morning the mountains in Hawaii have 30" of snow on them.  Looks so pretty.  I remember when I first moved to California and seeing Mt. Baldy covered with snow that first winter.  But, it means a big cold front headed throughout the country, even in the south.  Get ready!

I just read that in my morning newspaper. Looks like all of us may have a colder winter ahead.

It snows every year in Hawaii......

but I'm guessing the quantity is a pinch greater this year.

It must be a slow news day to make this an 'event.'

If you Google 'snow hawaii', there are lots of

articles/pictures of years past.

According to Ken Rubin, an assistant professor of geology and geophysics at the University of Hawaii, "It snows here every year, but only at the very summits of our three tallest volcanoes (Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala).

"The snow level almost never gets below 9,000 feet in Hawaii during the winter, but since these mountains are taller than 13,600 feet, 13,700 feet and 10,000 feet, respectively, they get dusted with snow a few times a year," he added. "It rarely stays on the ground for more than a few days though."

I didn't realize Hawaii got snow in their mountains.  It sounds like more than normal amounts.  The cold is supposed to be in our area by the end of next week. I'm not ready.  Smiley Indifferent

The volcano on the large island gets snow every year - there's skiing there too.

Is it a sign we will all have a colder winter?  I don't know.

The SF weather reporters are already talking about cold weather around here.  It's been cold in the city for quite a few days and we are told it will become even colder in upcoming days.

Several areas are already in the low 30s around here.  Yes, I know that's no big deal for some people, but it's a bit unusual here, especially if you're not used to weather extremes.
