I see this a lot.

Why don't smokers think their butts are trash?  Do they throw their Burger King bags out the car window too?

I'm not sure but someone does.  I see more of this kind of trash than I see cigarettes.  Over the weekend I was driving behind a car and the person driving was tossing all kinds of papers out the window onto the highway.

You are more apt to notice paper trash along the highway than a cigarette butt because that paper trash is larger and sticks out more.

Yes, I've seen people toss cigarettes out the car window-infuriates me to no end especially during dry seasons.

Yes, I've seen people toss out drink containers and hamburger wrappers-whatever the slob is having.

Yes, I've seen people leave trash on the ground when a bin is no more than a few feet away.

Yes, I've seen pets dump right on sidewalks while the owner blissfully walks away from it.

So much ignorance and laziness.

The topic here, however, has trended to butts and those butts are just as crucial to litter and ultimately pollution issues.

Dang it people-if it isn't good for your health it isn't good for our planet.

Mother Earth weeps.

I think there are still lots and lots and lots of smokers in the world.  Some old, some young.

I work on the same campus where a major hospital system is located.  As soon as you pull into the drive, there is a sign indicating it's a non-smoking campus.  It has been that way over 5 years but it wasn't always that way.  You could always go outside and see people on their breaks smoking.  And I'm not only talking about the patients, I'm talking about the doctors, nurses, lab techs, etc.  My office entrance is around the back so when the campus first went no smoking, everyone would come around the back by our door and smoke their heads off because they couldn't be seen. That lasted until one of my bosses said something to them.  Now they all walk across the street to an open field and smoke!

My husband is in a band and plays out at bars and private clubs every weekend.  Despite the fact that smoking in bars and restaurants is illegal, some still allow patrons to smoke.  If they can't smoke inside, there is a designated smoking area somewhere outside where all the smokers congregate.  And if the band is playing outside on a deck or patio, plenty of people are smoking.

I have several relatives who still smoke and kids of friends who smoke.  I see people driving around smoking.  Not as much as I used to but I see them.

Some people are just slobs, regardless of whether they smoke or not.

Personally, I find drunks much more repugnant.  I have no sympathy for them.  They kill people in auto crashes and throw their beer cans in my yard.  I know so many people whose parents were alcoholics.  It's very destructive.  I can't believe they still allow people to drink in restaurants.

I just find this attitude so sad.  Alcoholics are addicted.  The ads for alcohol are everywhere.  It's hard to go into a restaurant without seeing a fully stocked bar.  We don't know how to help addicts.  People need help, not scorn.

Tansy, my point is that it is now quite fashionable to denigrate smokers.  It is a legal product, but smokers have been run out and restricted by the same people who drink and smoke marijuana, who somehow think that their sh** don't stink..  Its "that"very hypocritical, holier than thou attitude by others that I find sad.  Tobacco, regardless of its health risks, is the original cash crop that was integral to the founding of this country. It is legal, and smokers are no worse people than drinkers or prescription addicts.  But its OK to comment on how rude "they" are.

i still see quite a few friends and family and strangers who smoke.......cigarettes, cigars, mj, and hookah. there are quite a lot of hookah bars and cigar bars that have popped up in our area over the past 7 or 8 years. just because they smoke doesnt stop me from inviting them into my car, my home, my work. my s/o smokes and i am pretty sure he will NEVER quit. it would never stop me from being around him or from loving him. the people i am close with do not litter as far as i can see AND they go outside to smoke.

our condo complex at the beach requires you to smoke only in your individual units, however, with the system they have OR if people leave their balcony doors open, it is easy to smell the smoke......of all types.

Nothing like non smokers bitching about smokers. I don't smoke nor either do I criiticize people who do. I see alot of over weight people should I criticize them for having a habit of over eating? and that too can kill you. Also have you ever seen a party on tv where they are having wine or beer? Have you ever seen a person bleed out from sclerosis of the liver from drinking? I have. whoa I'm sure that would really disgust you. Please. list us your bad habits? @HLPThen you are in the wrong place.  There is plenty of good info on this thread.

I agree that smokers shouldn't be called names but the topic lends itself to a discussion about the consequences of smoking, cigarette butts, litter, etc.

Important facts can be conjoined with opinions and still leave this thread as an interesting topic.

@HLP  Like several others here, you are completely missing the point. Just because someone says they do not like smoke blown in their face does not mean that they cannot have compassion for someone who is a smoker.  There are plenty of people who are addicts who manage to live their lives without infringing upon other people's health and happiness.  I'm sure there are alcoholics who go home, get drunk and go to bed without getting in the car and killing someone or picking up the phone and screaming at their relatives or friends. Also, I am sure that there are cigarette smokers who don't feel the need to blow smoke in people's faces who are eating in a public restaurant or in a car filled with children.
