I am 3 1-2 weeks post op total hip replacement, In the hospital I slept with a head phone and a sleepmask.

I am home 3 weeks sleeping on the sofa with a sleepmask, and music from my I phone without headpones

I think the mask is causing me horrible headaches.

I am sleeping in the living room due to the height of my bed.

Any brilliant words of wisdom

thanks all

Re: Sleep masks and headaches

Maybe change type of mask?  I've used one for many years and prefer padded silk fabric with adjustable headband.  These are available on Amazon for about $10.

If your mask is too tight I can see that as causing your headaches. I've used them in the past and never had that problem.

I can not sleep with a mask on as I feel like I am suffocating.  I know that does not make sense, but that is me.  Why does anyone feel the need to wear one?

Re: Sleep masks and headaches

Are you using the same sleep mask that you wore while you were in the hospital?

Could it be that your hospital bed was elevated, etc., and now you are sleeping in a different position, your head/neck is now at an uncomfortable position?

I hope you find the cause of your headaches and am wishing you a speedy recovery.

@I am still oxox

Maybe not brilliant, but some ideas...

My mom had partial hip replacement surgery, and the doctor prescribed a hospital style bed where the head can be raised.  Medicare sent it without charge.  You may want to explore that, maybe sleeping on a sofa is the problem.

I have been using a sleeping mask for years, and they don't cause me headaches.  Could it be you are putting the mask on too tight?  I used to buy cheap ones. They left marks on my face in the mornng, even when loose.  I switched to silk, and even those are not all the same.  I tried several.  My favorite is from Amazon, "Anti Aging Sleep Mask with Copper Ion Technology by Sleep Fountain".  It is lightly puffy with a little lip at the bottom inside to block light. That little lip makes a difference, the mask can be looser.  I recommend.

I get headaches from environmental factors.  I can recommend, also from Amazon, "HEADACHE HAT The Original -Wearable Flexible Three Row Ice Pack for Migraines & Headache Relief Eye Mask Long Lasting Cooling Ice Therapy Stress Relief Tension Relief".  I have worn to sleep, put over my other mask, with good results, but I don't necessarily recommend that you wear to sleep, the "ice cubes" in the HEADACHE HAT can feel bumpy.  But maybe try it at other times and then see.  I feel it provides great relief.

I also feel I sleep better when I keep my head high.

Hope you feel better soon.  Take care.

To block out light.  Better than curtains, because natural light comes in when I remove the mask and before getting out of bed.  I like natural light coming thru my window, but not street lights shining into my bedroom when I go to sleep.
