Re: Slang terms from the past vs new/current ones...

Well, I do use groovy. Cause I can!

It makes me laugh. Like I am in a Brady Bunch episode.

People who know me, know I love words & I use weird words whenever. It' fun.

Remember 'far out' and 'bummer'?  Wish I had a dollar for every time I said bummer.  I still use 'cool' all the time, 'awesome' always sounded so pretentious to me.  I'll never be able to pull off "dope".

I don't use slang because I don't want some rude person saying, "ok boomer."

Re: Slang terms from the past vs new/current ones...

Are some of you pointing out that how we use slang might be an age thing?   I still use groovy, cooool, mahhhvelous, fabulous, the cat's meow, the bee's knees, swell, gnarly and lots of expressions I grew up with.

"Awesome" is a word I try not to use, but sometimes it just slips out and I hate myself for saying it.   "Far out" always reminds me of John Denver.

Re: Slang terms from the past vs new/current ones...

Wow, I FINALLY GOT IN!!  And now I don't recall how, but I had to go thru signing into my account and then going back into the forums/blogs and signing in there and wallah - here I am.  Hooray.  I didn't change anything.

But now back to your thread - I was more or less thinking of older expressions like:

Holy Cow or Holy Smokes!

No use crying over spilt milk

For crying out loud

For pete's sake

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink

Don't put all your eggs in one basket

I never used the word awesome, imo it is way OVER used.  The same goes with the word amazing.  I cringe whenever I hear it because it is the only descriptive word people seem to know anymore.  Esp. the judges on talent shows!!  Get a vocabulary people.

I know what you mean, @jellyBEAN ...

"Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit"

"Put that in your pipe and smoke it"

"Finer than frog's hair"

.... just to name a few

Someone on the messge boards uses th word "paramour." I thought that term was obsolete, and have never heard that word except in older movies. It does have a nice sound to it, though.

How about

Great Caesar's Ghost (used by Superman's boss a lot)

Everything is Hunky Dory (meaning all is well)

Heaven's to Betsey or Heaven's to Murgatroid(sp?)

Like a Dog on a Bone (can't leave well enough alone)

Doesn't matter how flat a pancake is, it still has two sides (thanks alot Dr. Phil) Woman Tongue

Well, I'll be a Monkey's Uncle

I've always hated "cool," especally when used by aging Boomers trying too hard to sound like they did in the 60s.
