I have a lab/pit mix. He weighs 85 lbs. I don't have renters insurance. That only covers any items in your apartment. Why does it sound strange to you? I thought the same thing but you never know what you are dealing with in our society. Judge Judy said that if the young people don't accept accountability for their actions, our country is going to be in bad shape. I have to agree. I just find it unacceptable that I had no input but one line on the form. My dog will probably end up going in the house as he needs to walk for awhile before he goes. I am very upset with this whole incident. I still don't know why I can not take him to the park. I drive him there and back. The park is approximately 2 - 3 miles wide. I feel sorry for him. Should I call the victim?

I would call and ask how he is. This opens direct communication between you the dog owner and the boy's parents.

You are talking about young people not taking responsibility, and yet you have no renters insurance, which would cover people that get hurt in your apartment, (and many other things) and it is YOUR dog who bit HIM and you blame him.. hmmm.. WHO is not taking responsibility here?

Don't worry, if it goes to court, you will have plenty of input-

I gotta agree. When we rented we never went without renters insurance

I have been out of work and am just getting by. I was walking him and the boy scared him. I was picking up the dog's feces and was holding the dog. My dog was provoked. I do take responsibility for my dog's actions if we were just walking and he bit someone. I would totally be held accountable for my actions but this situation was provoked by a skateboard. The laws in my city say he must obey all the rules of the road. This includes but is not limited to pedestrian traffic, signs and signals, etc. Why would it go to court?

At this point, I wouldn't try to contact the victim or his family. They have already contacted authorities and are planning some kind of action. I would instead consult with an attorney.

Why would it go to court? YOU are the one who said you saw a lawsuit forthcoming...Lawsuits generally end up I court-

Can you really control an 85 lb dog with one hand?

Why would it go to court? Simple, to pay for HIS out-of-pocket medical expenses and possibly HIS pain and suffering.

I've seen PLENTY of cases like this on "The People's Court". The Defendant stands there all wide eyed and says, "But, your honor, my dog has NEVER bit! He would NEVER bite! He's gentle as a lamb!"

Judge Marylin Millian responds with, "Your dog is an ANIMAL, and he is going to ACT like an ANIMAL. Just because he as never bitten in the past, is NO indicator that he can't, or won't bite."

Was Yuban, then changed to Plaid Pants due to forum upgrade, and apparently, I'm back to being Yuban.

The authorities were contacted because it's mandatory if you seek medical treatment., the hospital or Dr has to call.

Some people are just seeking treatment for the bite or scratch and don't realize the warden and others will be called.

I wouldn't contact the family either. I'd let it just go through whatever channels it needs to go through. I hope it all works out. But if there are medical bills to pay I'd be sure they're legit by asking to see photos and whatever records they can legally show you.

I don't think the dog was bad, or any of that. He was startled. Lots of dogs, big and small, will react the same way. My friend has a small dog and it will do that even in her home. Or it could be that your dog was thought maybe it was a game of chase.

Whether or not you think it is right, you will be responsible for any out of pocket medical expenses as well as pain and suffering. If skateboards are allowed on sidewalks, then in the eyes of the law, the boy did nothing wrong. Dogs are not allowed to bite. In busy pedestrian areas, I see many dogs muzzled to prevent exactly what happened here.
