Re: Size in Perspective

@On It. For years all the Western mountain men came from far and wide, hundreds of them, to an annual gathering in Taos.  They were rough and about as wild as the animals they trapped.  All sorts of drunken brawls, imported hooked etc.  They sold their furs, spent their money and, if lucky, took home a wife.

Just remembered, it was called "Rendezvous".

There's a name for this gathering which I can't recall.

I like Eustace and Marty on Mountain Men.

Wish they would shave and cut their hair. That Eustace looks like a street begger.

If Marty is the guy who was his constant friend and could do about anything, too, guess U know he died of pancreatic cancer and his son has took his place.

Can you imagine living that kind of life ? work yourself to death. Women all look like hale. Live in a old wood cabin, don't think you could get any kind of reception out there, for TV, radio, phone, etc.

worst of all for me would be no shopping. I'd kill myself

LOL No credit card bills any more that's for sure.

@SharkE Marty runs trap lines in Alaska. Eustace's friend was Preston. Preston was a teacher and educator before he appeared with Eustace. These guys are not as simple as the producers of the show would have us believe. Morgan who appeared for several seasons of Mountain Men has a degree in Environmental Science.

@SharkE.  I'm really surprised you'd be interested in watching this show.

Yes, their lives are a lot different than our but just imagine how bored they'd be living like we do.

I like that old white haired man. Little guy and his wife.

They got a kid that lives in Florida they got them to move down there for a short time, they're old and should just be enjoying the good life.

That didn't last long his poor wife had to go back to the mountains and the life of drudgery and doing without what we take for granted. Old man left Florida and went back to wild west life. Couldn't stand the good life.

People ! being old is bad enough , but, when your dependent on the elements and every day is a fight for survival who wants to live like that.

God bless 'em all I can say. Yeah, guess that was poor Preston who died. That was sad.

Up in Ind, kachina624 we cut wood for a wood burning furnace because we had a 2 story home and to heat it with gas would cost a fortune. So, we went out and sawed down trees, split it up into rollable chunks to roll up into the truck bed using wood planks, got out the wood splitter and split the chunks then again having to use a plank to get the chunks onto the wood splitter.

Now, you got 3-4 chunks of wood to throw into the truck bed, then, stack in the barn.

come winter you go out to the barn fetch the wood bring in house and store in the wood closet next to the furnace. You could use gas to set fire to the wood, but, he was so tight that he used newspapers to finally get the wood to burning. Wood/gas furnace.  All thru the day I would keep the thing burning, by adding more wood when it got colder.  He was gone all the time, so, it was my job.  After all that when the wood would burn down and the ashes would drop down in the ash chamber you had to scoop out the ash in buckets and

take outside.

after we moved to Tx I breathed a sigh of relief no more back breaking work to keep a house heated. Gas is cheaper down here then in Ind. Of course he kept the house at 69 in winter and 74-76 in summer.

Now, that he's dead my house is 72 in winter and 70 in summer. I got osteoporosis now and my back is in pain half the time. Taking Dr. prescribed pain pills. I figure all that work I done up there to keep from spending money is what is causing me pain now in my old age.

Why I can't believe people at their age wants to live like that at their age all their lives. I'm happy as a clam

now hire out the mowing, all that money he saved I'm

spending and I deserve it !!

My dad loves the show Mountain Men.  It is pretty interesting, but clearly not as dangerous as they sometimes present considering there's a camera crew following.

@cheriere.  I'd hate to depend on a photographer to fend off an attacking mountain lion or grizzly bear.

My dad too, would have been crazy about that show.  He was raised on a sheep ranch in Colorado and used to trap to earn spending money as a teen.

@Kachina624   lol so would I!!!

I just figured taping was probably done under pretty safe circumstances considering how strictly filming is done with these types of shows.
My faves are the moonshining bunch in NC lol
