If this happens again, ask the person if you can watch the movie with them since you can hear it anyway. Maybe they'll get the hint. Smiley Wink

One reason why I truly dislike cell phones and only use mine for emergency use. I feel it is an addiction just like anything else.  I hate it when I am in my nail shop and someone comes in and sits in the chair next to me and talks on her phone the entire time, and I am forced to hear the entire conversation.

We had that happen at a restaurant we used to frequent for breakfast on Sundays.  These two ladies would come in and play music really really loud at their table.  Eventually, no one else was eating on that side of the restaurant.....even the very large table of policemen moved to the other side of the room. 

 

Stopped going there when the supermarket across the road closed.......used to be breakfast and then grocery shopping.

@cindyNC - In that case, it was up to the owner/manager and staff to have dealt with the issue.

 

If they could see it was driving customers away, it was up to them to take action.  They shouldn't need to be asked to by other customers.

I agree that a good manager could have handled it, tactfully and unobtrusively in all likelihood. Have noticed that managers seem more and more, not to be able to take matters in hand.  Lack of confidence, or training perhaps, in handling stickier situations.

 

It feels a bit sad that she did this.  There's a long, honorable tradition of lone diners, eating in splendor in public!  Savoring food, subtle people-watching, perusing a favorite book-- all can be done quietly and without disturbing one's neighbors. 


@Oznell - TY for your kind words, and the last part of your post is so true. I have dined alone frequently. I always try to ask for a table by the window, if that's possible. I like to "people watch" too, maybe a result of learning how to do that when I was a student in France. 

I have often taken a book, or even gone over notes if I'm speaking. 

 

We had a nice time, but it was obvious they were short staffed, and the manager seemed rattled. He spent most of his time at the edge of the kitchen door, and he was probably not aware of what was happening.

 

 

 I don't think anyone was upset enough to ask for him.

IMO, this is totally unacceptable behavior.  People spend their money to go out and enjoy a meal at a public restaurant.  This person obviously doesn't have good sense.  She should have been told to turn off or lower the volume on her device, or leave.  This is a burden for people dealing with the public in today's society, because you just don't know how anyone is going to act.

I went to a movie last week and people were asked on the screen to silence phones. My Chiropractor has a  recent sign on the  entrance door to please silence phones.  They had a sign on the desk before but probably wasn't seen? I generally haven't had to wait more than five minutes and if longer which is rare, take you to one of the adjustment rooms to wait. I have gone there many years so surprised?

 

It has gotten to be a problem and lack of courtesy everywhere. "It's all about me !" I am not much of a phone use person, rather text.

If it was keeping me from enjoying my dinner and convo with DH, yes, I would have said something. I would approach her, and nicely ask if she would please turn the sound down so others could enjoy their dinner.  If she refused, I would have asked the waitress if she could move us.  Some people!

personally, I think the job fell to servers or management. If it was that noticeable they could have suggested to turn down volume a bit. That is their job. Unless, they knew her and she was transient or had issues.  But even then with transients and difficult people a good restaurant knows how and when to handle these people.

Agree 100%.  It is an addiction.  I sometimes feel like asking what they are looking at that's so important.  And it will only get worse with AI.
