Those who suffer bi-polar disorder very, very often go off their medications quite wilfully. I might feel sorry for their loved ones in this, but as for their own behavior, they made the decision - and unless courts decide they are so impaired they need to be institutionalized, it is their decision to stop taking their meds. I can't feel sorry at that point.

That is part of the disease of mental illness.

The disease tricks you in to thinking that "Hey! I'm feeling better! I don't need to take my medication anymore!", so they go off it.

It's not always a conscious decision.

It isn't always so cut and dry like that.

Well isn't it defamation of character or slander? I guess it must be against the law since he is suing her for it.

The thing I noticed the most with bi-polar patients, particularly those who tended towards mania, is that they LOVE the feeling of being manic.

They actually feel in control and just in this superior place where they have all this going on. In reality, of course, they are just wildly manic and NOT in control at all. But it's just this euphoric feeling that takes them over, to the extend that they don't want to take the meds.

That can be the hard part - getting your patient to the point where s/he will accept that s/he MUST take the meds without stopping, and never feel like they are in control. They are in control BECAUSE they take the meds. Well, that's assuming that a given patient has the right combination of meds for his/her condition. Some bi-polar patients are in such a extreme state that it's really difficult to get it right and some never do. I've seen that also.

You are right, it's part of the illness. Mentally ill people often make bad decisions, on meds or not.

That's what mental illness is and does.

In this great country of ours, anyone can sue anybody for anything.

Doesn't mean that the suit has merrit.

Suing and prooving are two different things.

The defendant has to proove their case, and that can be easier said than done.

Right. In a manic state they think they are just fine, coping so well they don't need meds.

It is a VERY COMMON reaction and it's not their fault.

Hey Noel! Exactly!

At times, when dealing with such a patient, I actually wondered how the mania must feel, just being one with PTSD and depression. It's like the opposite of how I've ever felt. Not to make light, of course, but it's a curiosity to know how somebody is feeling in a given scenario and how one can find a way to help them understand that they are not ok and need help.
