Eastridge, Valley Fair, Mayfield Mall, San Antonio Shopping Center, Sunnyvale Town Center, Stanford Shopping Center, The Old Mill, Town and Country Village – these were just some of the Bay Area shopping meccas when I lived in that area.  Most are past tense.

@CareBears- It's all true, but sadly the loyal employees are going down with the ship.

Sears was never a favorite store of mine but I hate to see them go.

@sunala The loyal employees that are left, when Sears Holding bought out all the Kmart stores they fired/laid off, whatever you want to call it most of the full-time employees, some were offered part-time jobs at minimum wage, no benefits, and then add insult to injury Sears Holding decided to not pay those employees their retirement funds, a class action suit was brought against Sears Holding but when all was said and done the employees ended up with pennies on the dollar, how do I know this, my husband was one of those employees, he worked for Kmart for 28 years, was called into the managers's office one morning was told he could work there part-time for minimum wage,& no benefits, he and 98% of the full-time employees were escorted out by security, and we lost a substantial (for us anyway) amount of money due to the fact that they refused to pay out the retirement funds to the employees.

So to the Naysayers who accuse me of hating ALL corporations, NOT true, I dislike Sears Holding, because they devastated so many families financially because of their greed, so the old saying rings true in this case "The rich get richer and the poor get sc******!

My city's failing malls have strangely and curiously revived the downtown retail scene. I was just downtown yesterday and the shops were bustling! The little park in the middle of downtown was full of people. It was so refreshing to see people out and about shopping. I ate lunch at sidewalk cafe and I had to wait for a table, it was so crowded.

I'm so sorry, Carebears. I can't imagine how horrible it must have been for you and your husband to have gone through this. I don't think most people realize how deep and terrible the psychological wounds when someone who has worked for an employer for 20+ years is suddenly told they are expendible and ushered to the door. It affects not only them but their family. Being robbed of one's hard-earned retirement makes the situation all the more devasting, emotionally as well as financially. How do you go on from that, especially if you are older?

Eddie Lampert, CEO and primary owner of Sears Holding, is scum. He destroyed not only K-Mart and Sears and the lives of all the long-term employees, but the lives of Land's End employees as well. He has never had any interest in growing the company or adapting the retailer to the times, but selling off its brand names like Craftsman, its real estate, whatever he can sell off, and pocketing the money.

The Sears near our house was left to decay and disarray from the time he took possession of the company, with a collapsing store roof that leaked into buckets around the store as shoppers were directed around the rubble. This went on for years.

If Sears had hustled I'm sure they could have grown into a formidable competitor to Home Depot and a few other retail chains as well. But Lampert allowed the stores to languish into irrelevancy and chaos. And it is everyone's loss, except for Lampert who has grown rich.

I'm so sorry, Carebears! Heart

What is to happen to all the ordinary and extraordinary malls across our country? Maybe some of our smart Americans will come up with a way to turn them into some kind of business ventures and increase jobs and economy for everyone.

One of our malls is turning into a lifestyle destination.

The mall already has several restaurants, a movie complex, a restaurant/game center and a food court.

Most of the national chains have pulled out and the remaining stores are all local (including Pure Integrity candles - a favorite of people who post here!)

They will be adding apartments and townhomes - a "village square" - more businesses like the candle company that has their manufacturing facility here as well as their retail store.

They also hope to add medical and dental offices, small businesses (insurance, printing, etc.), a farmers' market and more - all to turn the mall into both a home as well as conveniently located amenities.

@terrier3

What a great idea!

Many people would love to visit a place like this to shop and enjoy... the idea is kind of like the small shopping centers which lost out due to the "big malls."

It is karma--weren't they the ones who tried to shove the dismal "Kardashian klothing" line down our throats a few years ago?

Welp @Colinka I guess you weren't around when the Q was riding the Kardashian coat tails either.

Au contraire! I was around, and remember quite well the Kardashian presence on the Q. Perhaps the Kardashian bad luck karma is also responsible for the continued decline of the Q's good fortune? From the complaints on these boards, the Q is definitely suffering from poor IT, lagging sales, discontent with delivery, etc.

@AuntMame Thank you, fortunately we were lucky and my husband was able to find another job immediately, but not at the same rate of pay and no benefits, he had to take on another job that offered benefits as we had a child and because of my health issues we had no choice, we had to have insurance.

I just remember some of the men and women who were ushered out the door that day, they had 30+ years working at K-Mart and many were of retirement age, they were left with nothing for their retirement and were at an age where they could not start over, it was just so sad for everyone involved!
