Re: Signed Mom Up for Assisted Living at Last!!!

Don't fool yourself into thinking there are good facilities out there, All of them, and I do mean all of them are overbooked and understaffed. At the very best your loved one will be neglected. At the very worst she will be abused both physically and emotionally.

Croemer, thank you for your suggestion. You are the voice of reason, as usual. Smile

You bet Maddisson, I am just going on past threads and once the pointed questions start...it is a feeding frenzy. You did what was best for your family and have to make no excuses.

When I was visiting my stepmom at the physical rehab facility after she had a hip replacement, I realized it was also a home and one man was sitting in a wheelchair right outside his room and as I walked by he asked me to take him out of there. He in fact begged me. I didn't know what to do. The nurse's area (don't know what their title actually was and maybe it was medical assistant) was right in the center of a 4-way intersection of hallways and they were fully aware of him. It was heartbreaking. There was another man calling out for help inside of his room....over and over and over again. I went to the nurse's area and inquired about both and she just said, oh they always do that. I felt ill and cried all the way to my stepmom's room. When it was time to pick her up and take her back to her house she told me she never wanted to go there ever again....I certainly will never take anyone there ever again.

That is a shame and I am sure you realize that they are not all like that. As a matter or fact some are really great.

She was transferred there from the hospital by ambulance. No opportunity to check it out beforehand and I think she really wasn't that concerned at the time because she knew it was short term. For long term care, we would definitely check out many facilities.

You don't know what you're talking about. There are plenty of good facilities out there. If you are looking for a good nursing home, you need to find one that is all private pay.

I've worked in many, some considered top notch so yes I do know what I am talking about. Some of the private paid are the worst offenders.

Re: Signed Mom Up for Assisted Living at Last!!!

This is always a difficult situation.

There is SOME analogy to our parents caring for us, not all apply, in my opinion. A parent has the power over the children, you don't have it over an elderly parent necessarily. Also, everyone is younger and therefore more able to tolerate certain things.

There's only SO MUCH anyone can take, and the OP has reached it. This woman has been stated to always be difficult, and age changes have made her WORSE.

I think children have an obligation to see that a parent is adequately cared for. It cannot always be in their home.

As an RN, I have seen this through the whole spectrum, even being a visiting nurse in many of these situations. I have faced it and AM facing it again in my own life.

For ANYONE who thinks they would do better, I say not to judge here.

Facilities are licensed aren't they? If some of the private paid are the "worst offenders" how do they not get caught and cited for violations during state inspections?

You are kidding, right? Are inspectors there 24/7?
