@Sunshine Kate, each to his own.
I think travel within the U.S is a wonderful but a totally different experience than traveling elsewhere. Our two trips to Europe (Italy; then England and France) were remarkable and unforgettable. And as I've mentioned, our family is very excited about our upcoming safari in Tanzania.
BTW, we don't dwell on all the negatives that could happen. We take the best precautions and then just do it.

@suzyQ3 I agree. It’s wonderful to travel around the USA, but when you go to another country, you reallize just how young our country is in terms of architecture, art and tradition. Even when you travel to a Caribbean island, the water is clearer, the history of the locals is rich, and the air even smells better. When anyone asks what advice I’d give to young people, I always tell them to read everything they can get their hands on, and travel abroad as much as possible. You can be sure this will make you a smarter, more well-rounded, and compassionate person.

@Fayeth15 I'm glad to know your niece and her boyfriend's family suffered no fatalities - or for that matter were made otherwise unwell They were the lucky ones.

@ValuSkr, I'm not at all dismissing the problem there, but I think that the vast majority of visitors have been "lucky."

There’s a good article from NBC news called, “No, the Dominican Republic Hasn’t Suddenly Become More Dangerous.” It talks about how there were twice as many American tourist deaths in the months of June in 2015-2018 than so far for June 2019. Deaths are down for the year in comparison to the halfway point of the year for several years of the past.

Around 11 American tourists have died in a little over a year in the Dominican Republic, and most recently, 47 people out of a travel group of 114 reported becoming violently ill after traveling to the Hotel Riu in Punta Cana. Have you canceled a trip to the country yet?
