Re: Should I not go to the Dominican Republic in October?

@cherry   And hundreds who were sickened, but didn't die.  Something is going on there.  It's time for the tourists to go elsewhere.

I wonder how many non-Americans died there under the same circumstances.

This is just awful.

Not without a bodyguard.....so many other places, but DR is much less expensive. Not the time to really think of money, think of safety.

I was just wondering the same thing. Something is going on there alright, and I don't think its innocent or some kind of accidnetal poisoning or whatever nonsense it is they are saying.

@JBKO

I know you've received pages and pages of replies, but if I had booked the trip, I'd move heaven and earth to find an alternate destination. Period.

Why?  The State Dept and FBI have yet to conclude any of their investigations.  Just yesterday, the son of one of the victims indicated that he's being stonewalled by the department over there which includes the coroner's office with regard to obtaining certain specimen's from his mother's remains.  She worked at a hospital and that hospital has indicated it will run any and all tests required free of charge, but the Dominican authorities to date will not release any specimens whatsoever.  It appears they are covering up by delaying.

I wouldn't set my big toe in that country.  Something quite dreadful is going on and it would be horrid if this were just the beginning.

Just the fact that they want to cremate the bodies tells me something funny is going on over there...

People who know that the Dominican Republic rarely gets hit by hurricanes. The last one was 1998.

My niece just returned after spending a week at a nice resort there and had no problems. She went with her boyfriend’s family. All were safe.

Hi everyone. Hope you are doing well. I haven't had a proper vacation since the week before September 11th. I went to Europe on a school trip in 2003, studied abroad in France in 2007, and went to Connecticut for a weekend last October. As you can imagine, I've been longing for a restful vacation ( I think I deserve it) and decided to go to the Dominican Republic in October with my sister and her boyfriend.

We were planning to go off the beaten track and explore parts of the country that most tourists don't encounter. I was so excited for our excursions (prehistoric caves with petroglyphs and even a blue pectolite mine) but now it looks like it's not going to happen. My sister is really worried with what's going on. Can you blame her? What would you do if you were in our shoes?

TIA

i would choose another place where you can actually relaxSmiley Happy  Good luck
